If two enemy characters from opposing rank and file units fight in a challenge, how does their positioning work? GW states you can move them out of the unit and put them next to each other to make it more dramatic I suppose ( which it is). So if we move them out, would the models behind them move up or stay where they are and attack accordingly as if the model was still there?

If the characters are moved out of the unit for that dramatic effect, are they still considered as being where they originally were?

Or would the models do some sort of "make way" to move within their unit to get into base to base contact?

Or could you technically just keep them where they are in their units, even if they're not touching in base to base, and consider them being able to fight each other in challenges?

The question comes up because it will then dictate what you could do, or what can be done, with the other models in the unit.

Any answers / insight is appreciated.

You don't move them out of the unit. You just move them so that that get into base to base.

Who should move? The one making the challenge? What if you don't want to move from your spot?

In the challenge rules it specifically states the challenged character moves into btb with the challenger. If you don't want to move don't accept the challenge.

Although you would then have to move to the back anyway...
1) You move into B2B If you can - not possible in some circumstances because of base sizes This is done as a Make Way by the person accepting the challenge.
You can then lift the models our for dramaric effect if you like.

2) it is a a dramatic effect; they are really still in place

Models will push up if a fighter in the challenge dies at a higher I step; My Exalted Hero I6 kills your mage, one of your core pushes up before my core strike at I5.

Unless you accepted with someone else... then you wouldn't move or if the only ones to accept the challenge were unit champions then refusing allows you to stay where you are.

But yes everything you said was correct.

Cheers, hadn't noticed that about champions.

So, if the only model that you have available to accept a challenge is your unit's champion, and you decline the challenge, your champion model is not physically moved to the back of the unit?

Is this because champions must always be in the front or something? And if he CAN'T be moved back, can he still attack in combat because he's still in base to base? If he can't attack, does he prevent the rank and file model that WOULD be in his spot if he HAD moved to the back from attacking?

Champions can refuse challenges without being sent to the back. It is part of the challenge rule. It was a change for 8th ed which some people have missed.

Note though that if you also had a character who could accept the challenge, "refusing as the unit champion" wouldn't stop them being moved to the back.
It is the challenger's choice which character is moved if the challenge is refused, except that they can't select the unit champion.

What happens when 1 character cannot refuse, and another character can?

I charge a lone hero and a unit with a hero into the front of your unit. You issue a challenge. Am I able to refuse, as I have a hero who can hide?
I don't see anything in multiple combats about challenges.

Yes your hero in the unit can refuse. However the lone Hero can't so must accept unless someone else ACCEPTs for him.

As above. You have no ability to refuse the challenge as your SIDE refuses the challenge, NOT any specific model.

One model cannot refuse
