Sooo,

This is KINDA really random. But basically I've been eying keeping a hedgehog for a few years now. The building I'm going to live in has some pretty weird rulings when it comes to pets we can keep, and I just wanted to see if there's anyone else on Dakka who keeps hedgehogs or chinchillas. Now I don't think the person who wrote the rules played 40k or is a 40k ruleslawyer, but RAW I technically can't keep one in the building, but it's open to interpretation because it states "common small household pets". AFAIK, hedgehogs are not exactly common, so, I don't know where this leaves me. Would it be very easy to keep a hedgehog and not leave a trace of it?

And of course, mandatory hedgehog picture SQUEEEE:

Hedgehogs aren't really cuddly pets. They're cute, but really expensive...

Also, ask your landlord. You keep it in a tank/terrarium/etc, so it should be fine.

They attract fleas, lice, and enemy radar!

On the plus side, they eat slugs, and given that Britain is being overrun by slugs, maybe a pet 'hog is a good idea.

You guys get way cooler pets than we do...probably something to do with when they escape here and go feral they REALLY go feral. In England if they escape they can't really go anywhere wild (dartmoor maybe, but then they have to contend with ferocious ponies).

I was looking into pets when I first moved out and I wanted a chinchilla so bad, turned out they are illegal here along with pretty much anything else. So very depressing.

You guys are hilarious.

To further clarify, I'm living in the US and 'hogs aren't exorbitantly expensive here compared to other countries or other animals. I have a friend who has one, so I'm pretty aware of the fleas/lice thing, but we don't tend to get many of them in Mass because it's so darned cold here.

I am planning to keep him in a tank for the most part though, as I don't want him to get lost in my mess, but I'd never heard of the promiscuous in the past.

Quick question, how on earth do you deflea/louse a hedgehog? With really long tweezers or something? It's not like you can rub in anti-flea stuff...

With great difficulty.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

I genuinely laughed at this for about 20 seconds.

Anyway, I've been considering purchasing a chinchilla for my daughters. They spotted one at the pet store and absolutely freaked.

Are they comfortable riding in your pockets or on your shoulders? I'm surprised they don't jump out/off.

Its a bond issue. Younger they are the more bond they develop to you and your kids (kids just need to be careful with them) besides they knew where to get the addiction fix....I have papaya and almonds on hand for snacks. Cantalope though is like crack to them.

I had a couple of pet Ferrets for awhile, then I went back to cats. They needed a bath twice a week even though they'd had their scent glands removed, and every time I let them run loose they pooped in the corners. Don't know about hedgehogs, except for watching some YT videos, they look pretty boring to me. But, then again my favorite pet of all time was the praying mantis I had in high school. I loked watching her hunt down the crickets I put in her terrarium to eat. It was like the Predator movies, but live.
