Is it worth paying the points to give my Lord a halberd if I intend to run him with the hellfire sword, does it become a hellfire halberd so to speak?

Nope, weapons don't combine. However it may come in handy in case your magic weapon is destroyed somehow by the enemy.

Or if they have some immunity or ward save specifically against magical hits.

I thought you couldn't ever elect not to use a magic weapon if you possess one?

Entirely possible, my frame of reference is past editions.

You are forced to use a magic weapon if you got one.

I know that if you have a magic weapon you must use it. I guess waht i really meant was, does it still count as +1 strength using the hellfire sword if i've paid for the halberd option?

I seem to remember that somewhere in the brb it says that items such as the filth mace, although it says mace it's just a name, and can be a sword or axe etc.

You want to use a weapon's bonus despite not using the weapon...I guess the answer is pretty clear

That's why you ask questions, so that others can make things clear for you. I must apologise for not understanding the rules as well as others do.

Actually can't you do that with some magical weapons that affect the bearer? Not the wielder?

Maybe. If the ability is passive(like you gain a ward save or something and it doesn't require you to use the weapon) but I don't know of any that are worded like that.

The only magic weapons like this would be weapons that couldn't be used in melee for some reason. A magic bow perhaps. Or a magic lance on a turn you aren't charging.

You only get effects from a weapon if you use that weapon. Like if a unit had a GW that caused ASF, that wouldn't matter if they had a ranged weapon they were using.

Skaven Fellblade gives buffs to the bearer not the weilder, so you could potentially take another magic weapon and get both buffs. Except that it costs all your allowance. Oh, and it sucks.

And you can't buy multiples from the same category (weapon) and it costs 100 so it's impossible to buy anything more. But other than two impossibilities, you could totally do that.

It's the case for some Bretonnian weapons, because we always use the lance on the charge not the magic weapon. So there is the potental for +4S from certain combinations of weaponry This is all IIRC.

No, that just lets you use a mundane Lance in preference to a magic weapon if you charge. it doesn't let you use both at the same time.
