So, I recently got back into 40K after many (many (maaany)) years of not playing, so one of the first things I did was hit eBay to see what could be found for cheap. And I was not disappointed! One of the first auctions I saw was for a lot of 2nd ED boyz - the goofy looking ones with a single pose. 20 boyz for $10 - I couldn't pass that up! They arrived and I spent a week painting them up for my Evil Sunz army.

Unfortunately, if you're familiar with them, they're pretty distinct-looking in an army composed of mostly- current models, especially considering they're about a head shorter than even the most hunched-over Boy, and maybe a head taller than current Gretchin.

There's also the fat that if I went up against someone who is a particular stickler about looking for modeling-for-advantage, they might have a problem with playing against them at all, so I needed to figure out a way to make them usable in a 6th ED army. And clearly, some extra fluff was needed. They are now Redbull's Rawr Rekroots:

Led by Nob Redbull, who travels to worlds with sizable Wildboy populations to recruit young Boyz and train them up for fighting right proppa. Since they're young and haven't experienced much combat, they're a bit smaller in size than the average Space Ork. They're outfitted in Redbull's Kit, which are terribly-maintained choppas and sluggas, and crappy squig-iron armor from the grot forges - literally crappy, as it's made by molding squig droppings into shape, then baking it until it's rock-hard and slapping it on looted flak armor. It might look (and smell) intimidating to other races, but to orks it's the equivalent of a paper hat and "trainee" nametag, so they tend to get traded away for more personalized armor at the first opportunity.

As far as using them in my army, I've made a few slight rules modifications to make them a little more fair - they don't get MUCH of an advantage for their size, especially since they travel in a large mob, but just for the sake of good sportsmanship. Well, not really rules modifications as much as what I've restricted myself to when playing with them. In all respects they are, on paper, a mob of stock Boyz with the same base stats as in the Codex. But I'll only use them in their own mob, never above the 20 models I have (no modern boyz mixed in). They don't get heavy weapons, because they're training with a slugga and choppa combo after having lived in the forests their whole lives until now. As such, Redbull only carries a slugga/big choppa set (no PK), though I do give him 'eavy armor and a bosspole, because come on.

Yer, I could be a warboss, but dat looks like a lot o' hassle and 'eadache. Da way I seez it is, ev'ry army needs summat ter fight wif. So wot I duz, see, is I goes out and gavvers up all da weedy li'l gits I kin get me 'ands on, and I makes 'em inter real boyz. Dat way, I gets a load a' teef fer ev'ry boy I brings da warboss, plus I gets ta yell at 'em, which is larf.

That's GREAT!

By restricting yourself (no heavy weapons, no popular loadouts), you are minimizing the reasons your opponents might complain about slightly smaller models. Then, to top it off, you also have a 'fluff' justification for your old school orks.

I love it.

I would also suggest, since they are Redbull's mob, and they have those snazzy 2nd edition backplates, that you might get some bull transfers and give them some proppa mob markings.

I have ONE of those old Ork Boyz, but I use him as a 'tough as boots' geezer in one of my ork units. He's old as squig droppings and set in his ways. All the other boys look at him and shake their heads at the crotchety old nutter.

Thanks for the kind words (I probably should have put this in the general painting thread...)

I tried using some of them on the modern Orks that have backplates, but didn't really like the look of them... mybe they'll be better on older models? I have a buttload of Goff clan glyphs from the various box sets I've bought, those would work.

I love this fluff you have going right now! I would have no problem playing against this mob at all, but that's just me.

I guarantee you that I'm not really as smart as the test says:

It's Just good that they don't have as bad scoliosis as the new orks.

It's that feely feel that feels... feely.....
