This is a good question as I bought a massive HP printer (I wanted an A3 scanner - that I have never used ) without giving ink a second thought. You don't want one that takes 940xl that's all I know - cost me nearly £100 to replace a full set of cartridges!

Without looking too closely into it Epsom always seem to have the cheapest ink and there are 3rd party cartridges for them too.

I would suggest a trip to a Tescos would be time well spent. Not only do they have a whole host of cheap printers to look at but you can also gauge ink costs as they always seem to have tons of it there.

Finally whenever buying electronic I more often than not log on to Which. They will have guides to buying printers there and will look at whole life and efficiency rating too. Well worth the £1 they charge for the trial period.

Only advice I can give is, as a rule of thumb, the cheaper the printer, the pricier the ink.

Think of it this way, most of the time buying a printer that's on a ridiculously good special offer means that the company is trying to get rid of stock, e.g. the printer is a very old model, as an older model less places will stock the inks it needs, therefore you are pushed further to specialist retailers/buying from manufacturer, which means inflated ink prices.

Put it this way, my gf bought a lexmark printer for about £30 new 2 years ago, by the time it came to replace the ink cartridges a few months later, the set of cartridges cost more than the printer, because they stopped making that particular printer not long after we bought it (which isn't exactly something you can find out easily).
