Why do Eldar and Dark eldar wear those pointy hats? Is there a reason?

This gave me a good chuckle. Like all armies in 40k: When in doubt, top knot 'em out.

They're races very heavy on aesthetics from a fluff perspective. From a sculptor's/game perspective, it gives them a distinct silhouette.

They were originally developedcas elves in space. All GW elves have had the long head/helmet aesthetic so it has just stuck overvtime. As noted above it also provided an instantly noticable difference to marines and the other Rogue Trader races when their bodies were all pretty much the same. From that time, marines have become a lot more chunly, while the Eldar range has been kept more slender, but the hat is still an obvious difference.

Please excuse any spelling errors. I use a tablet frequently and software keyboards are a pain!

Good thing they found out a way to cover them. They all look hideous

I love the fact Eldar are space elves, but the biggest turn off for me on them IS the huge conehead helmets. I'd have to buy all third party elf heads or use dark eldar naked heads.

I need to return some video tapes.

The one thing I've always loathed about Eldar. I don't think I could bring myself to command an army of coneheads :-/

So that when they charge into close combat all the have to do is put their heads down and run blindly forwards. The enemy will impale themselves on their helmets.

(actually, with all the spikes, "get in the middle of them and flail around a lot" might be a valid Dark Eldar close combat strategy)

lol. This is the new official reason.

The old official reason was because WHFB elves have pointy helmets, and when they made eldar, they started by just taking WHFB minis and giving them guns.

They're trying to compensate for something. I thought this was obvious.
