Hello! Quick question for you guys - I'm grabbing me some space wolves, and I realised that the box for their troops can be made into the 3 different wolf packs blah blah blah. My question - because I want them to be represented right, how do you build them to represent grey hunters? Because as we all know grey hunters have a bolter, bolt pistol, and close combat weapon. If I gave them... say a bolt pistol and chainsword - how do you know that they're not blood claws? Do I just have to tell people at a game? I don't want to build them and then people go 'No you can't play them as greyhunters cause they're built as blood claws' and then I'll be like 'DANG IT!!!' My thanks

Grey Hunters have different marking on the pad. (red and black, Blood claws are yellow and red off the top of my head)

Best bet is to model some with bolters and others with bolt pistol and CCW.

Shamikebab has it right. In addition, Wolf Guard are black on yellow and Long Fangs are black on white. On Space Wolves the left shoulder pad is for your Great Company symbol and the right is for pack markings. What I'm planning to do with my Wolves is to paint the right pad in the correct color then use the decals provided for the pack markings.

Yeah I would definitely use the correct markings on the armour. I do it and it both looks good, and works well in game, also just give the Grey Hunters a few more models with helmets, as opposed to those without. As for playing in game, don't worry too much about people not allowing you to use something, I don' think there are too many players like that, and if you want a Grey Hunter to have a bolter and chainsword, then just put him in the unit and he is a Grey Hunter, just make sure the unit is made of almost entirely models with bolter and chainswords, because at that point the unit may as well be Blood Claws.

I have blood claws and grey hunters modelled in my army (since 3rd edition) with different paint schemes. They all work as Grey Hunters right now (and have since the most recent codex came out). Basically, it works like this:

- Any space wolf model with a combination of BP, Bolter and CCW can be a Grey Hunter
- Any space wolf model with a combination of BP and CCW can be a Blood Claw

Since BC is the more restrictive category, all of your BC models also can serve as GH. No one has had a problem with this in all my games since the new codex.

Put little miniature wheels of cheese on their bases. Gouda for Long Fangs, Cheddar for Grey Hunters, Mozzarella for Blood Claws, etc etc. That way opponents will be able to tell at a glance.

i made all my GH with helmets, mixed bolter/bp/ccw.
My claws are all helmetless, and all bp/ccw.

Keeps it easy at a glance.

Easy answer. The grey hunters are the ones on the table. The blood claws are the ones that never leave the shelf or are being used as grey hunters.

I have been using the pack coloration markings since second edition and it has worked very well. I also put the pack, not company colors and tooth markings on some of the knee pads.

It is not uniformly done in my army though because I have a lot of older models and the mark 6 armour with studs on one shoulder is hard to paint with pack or company marks.
