Subject: Suggestions for WW2 Skirmish rules?

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away...

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but a quick search didn't bring any relevant hits for what I want to find... So throwing this out to the Dakka knowledge base and see if anyone can point me in a suitable direction?
Here's the rundown of what I'm planning...
It's a WW2 skirmish that is played out in the style of a role-play game crossed with a computer game. The scenario is to be played with me as the GM and in control of the Germans, whilst my co-player will be in control of British Commandos. The Commandos have a finite number of troops, 2 squads of 10-15 men with the possibility of up to 10 French Partisans, so max of 25 men. The Germans have a lot more troops available, however they start the game in 'patrol' mode and can't react until an alarm is raised, either by the sound of gunfire or a botched ‘silent kill’ attempt by the Commandos, Reinforcements would also be available after a set number of turns once the alarm is raised. There’s also the possibility to have limited numbers of vehicles for the Germans ranging from motorbikes to a Tiger tank, or two.
The scenario has the Commandos attacking a bunker complex on the Atlantic Wall (table is 4’x8’), figure scale is 28mm with a 1:1 model to man representation. Am also keen on having a campaign based on this, the Commandos would battle through the first scenario and depending on outcomes could then move on to the next scenario, e.g. a raid on the local garrison to destroy
Did a quick search for skirmish rules and the most popular for skirmish action appear to be Bolt Action, NUTS, Disposable Heroes and IABSM (Is this ‘I Ain’t Been Shot Mum’?). I also recently rediscovered a rule-set in my collection called The Face of Battle, although have never played it or even read it cover to cover. Any thoughts on these, or any others out there, in consideration of the game I’d like to run?
If I can find a suitable basic set, I’m more than happy to add my own ‘house’ rules, such as; Germans on patrol, raising the alarm, silent kills by the commandos, etc…

My limited experience with NUTS is that it may be one of the better sets for doing rules on the fly, i think wargames illustrated used it to recreate some Kelly heroes stuff months back. It also allows for cannon fodder grunts and more heroic soldiers with various skills, this would likely suit the roleplay feel your looking for better than some other alternatives.
And sorry for rough grammar and spelling currently on phone

The Face of Battle and IABSM are generally for a company per side, 3 or 4 times the figure count you want.
I'd go with NUTS! or Bolt Action. NUTS! is definitely a better choice for RPG elements to be included though.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |

Thanks for the replies, i'll take a closer look into NUTS. Although NH may be a little too far, especially as i'm currently in Poland :-)

Nuts! Sounds about alright, yup. Alternatively, try I Ain't been Shot, Mum by Too Fat Lardies.
Apart from everything, I strongly suggest looking into Platoon Forward by Too Fat Lardies. It's a supplementary book/pdf to be used for all WW2 platoon-level game and adds character traits for your officers, random events, scenarios, campaigns and so on. Highly recommended.
