Hi dakka, as I've posted before I'm acquiring bitz for my planned deathwatch strike force and I'm currently looking at picking up the vanguard veterans box. There are a few unopened metal ones floating around which are tempting but I'm unsure of the convenience of converting them to deathwatch. On the other hand, the finecast versions are obviously ubiquitous now - but I'm hesitant with finding quality moulds and possible/multiple returns - which will be less painful/frustrating - metal or finecast?

Finecast is much more detailed and common but ultimately more fragile and prone to breakage. Your call really.

Lol I was afraid of that. I suppose the resin will be easier for magnetizing as well. I didn't realize finecast was more detailed, is this generally the case, or determined by batch?

It's generally much crisper detail than metal.

Cheers Valkyrie, appreciate the advice.

You may also want to look at Forgeworld's offerings, instead of just the standard GW vanguard models.

Make sure to look at the sprues of finecast so you know whether or not the shoulders can be replaced. you can probably find pics on google. i just looked and it doesn't apear that many shoulderpads can be switched out for the nifty deathwatch ones, so some cutting up will be in order. the metaal ones will be way more difficile.

Both use exactly the same master models. So claims of increased detail are frankly bs.

However, the metal models are top-heavy. If you can get good casts, Finecast is...ugh, almost advisable. Cleanup is also tricky, on metals you will want a good set of needle files. On finecast you will want the knife-control of a sushi master.

I personally prefer the metals (for Sternguard too), but they're not available so easily these days.

Thanks winterdyne! As always your advice is most welcome. My main concern really stems for my appreciation of the detail on the vanguard set. With the issues for both metal and finecast, it's tempting to just mix and match with DC, SG and Forgeworld kits!

I think go with your own preference, if I were to go with finecast would want to make sure that the sculpts I received (especially with he prices we have in Aus) that I was getting crisp and perfect miniatures. If you order from GW and then send bad sculpts its much easier to get returns or have new models sent out which would be a bit trickier if you order them from elsewhere simply because they are cheaper.

You do know the 'sharper detail' claims come from the properties of the material being moulded, not the mould itself? Resin can hold sharper detail than white metal/whatever they used.

Metal Metal Metal Metal Metal! Unless you plan on masterclass painting, metal is less prone to breaking, doesn't warp, and is better to play with on the tabletop. If you go finecast, make sure to weight the bases.

Believe me, it's beginning to seem the most appealing option. Plastic and forgeworld resin!

Want my advice, mix and match the SG and DC kits, you'll have some awesome looking models.
