I'd guess dante, the man has seen more combat than anyone. There is a reason he was given overall command in the 3rd war for Armageddon

Gota agree with Comrade here Lord Solar Macharius is by far the best general in 40k I don't think any one has expanded the imperial borders/ done so much damage to the enemies of the imperium than Macharius did since the grate crusade.

Lord Solar Macharius never even actually technically lost his men simply got to scared to continue fighting past the Imperial Border, he is by far the best general, Xenos, Imperuim, Chaos or otherwise.

No the best but shout out to Bjorn. Single-handedly killed more men than entire regiments of guard, nearly bested a daemon primarch and led men to battle across a span of 10,000 years.

My vote for Lord Solar as well. Dude went undefeated from start to finish. His crew were too pansy to travel past the astronomicon though.

Actually he deliberately led the Ultramarines to Calth to be crippled by the Word Bearers.

And to Lorgar's credit, over half the Ultramarines Legion died that battle.

To Rowboats credit, his legion is roughly 60% of the existing chapters

Logan Grimnar. The man is right now holding off the largest Black Crusade in history.

On the Guard front, it's a three way tie between Sebastian Yarrick, Ursarkar Creed, and Sturnn. One is the bane of Orks, the other scouts Titans, and the third can take a planetary defense fortress by landing four platoons on its doorstep and fighting their way in.

Think of something clever to say.

I'd have picked Roboute Guilliman but he's in stasis, so next choice would be Macharius.

Out-of-the-box vote - Eldrad Ulthran. Just one example - with one attack the guy stopped an entire Waaaaagh AND started another one that is still crippling a different enemy much later on.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Commander Puretide.

He wrote the book of tactics for a major race and his disciples normally only master a subset of his teachings. It is possible that their expansion is partly due to him. The 40K univirse must be quite a culture shock of a young, galactically naive race like the Tau. Yet they take everything in their stride.

If that doesnt convince you remember this. Anyone who can make motivational tapes that grant Furious Charge to weedy Tau has got to be worth listening to.

Macharius would be a good choice for best also, he is the 40K personification of Alexander the Great. However the Emperor is heavily overated, he might be a godlike psyker, but when it comes to political and strategic acumen he leaves a lot to be desired.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

How is there even any debate here? The Silent King has been a military commander for millions of years and counts his campaigns(not battles, CAMPAIGNS) in the tens of thousands.

After ruling out everyone dead (like Macharius), inactive (like Big E and Silent K) and not very familiar to me (Nekrons and Tau) and focusing on the pure ability at leading a war campaign, before factoring in psychic ability, personal combat ability and wacky super equipment used by 40k personalities, I'd say:

Creed comes out on top. No psychic ability, no super augementation, no great warrior. Not even that charismatic, a mere child compared to every other choice I can think of and his equipment is two nice laspistols and a very loud buddy. Then look at the stuff he pulled and keeps pulling of.

My personal favorite and a rather outside would be Lord Lufgt Huron Blackheart. His archivements of leadership, strategy and logistics seem impressive. I don't think many could have pulled of the Badab war, leave alone extend it for so long and after losing manage such a comeback.

It's Creed. The man is peerless in his Tactical Genius.

Such is his mastery of stratagy that the laws of physics themselves are bent to fufil his masterful scouting manoeuvres.
