I'm brand new to tyranids, and can't quite understand how to interpret how many shots I'm supposed to be getting.

If I upgrade a hive tyrant with one set of them is that 12 shots? Two guns?
Upgrade it with two sets of them, 24 shots?

Is it 6 shots per gun, or six shots for the pair?

When you TL a gun, you still only get the number of shots listed in the profile - ie 6 with Brainleech Worms. All it does it gives the weaapon the Twin-linked special rule.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

I may have to be more precise with my question. If I purchase a "pair of twin linked devourers" with brainleech worms, am I getting 6 shots, or 12 shots. The entry for it states 6 shots, my confusion comes from it being described as a pair, indicating two guns. Does the profile account t for two guns, or one?

The pair is fired as a single TL-weapon. So even though you have 2 devourers you only get the shots for 1.

The Tyrant can be armed with two sets of weapons filling his four arms. You can thus buy him TWO sets of twin-linked Devourers, filling his four arm slots with two pairs of devourers (thus four devourers total).

The correct answer is that if you buy two twin-linked devourers with brainleech worms, the Tyrant gets 12 twin-linked shots, 6 shots for each set of twin-linked devourers. Six shots for each purchased twin-linked devourer (which is a pair of weapons filling two arm slots).

Happyjew is not confused. For each set of Twin-linked Devourer you get 6 shots. If you take 1 set you have 6 shots. If you take 2 sets you have 12 shots.

No biggie. I might have worded it better but after long day of work and no beer...

A key rule of thumb to remember is that, in 40k, a Twin Linked weapon or pair of weapons is always TWO guns in the fluff/on the model, functioning as ONE gun in the rules, with re-rolls to hit due to volume of fire (or re-rolls to wound, for template weapons).

So a twin-linked devourer is always going to be two devourers on the model, functioning as one devourer in the rules, with re-rolls to hit.

It can be a little confusing because some unit/weapon entries refer to a twin-linked weapon as a weapon, singular, and some use the term twin-linked weapons, plural.
