So I was looking at Wolf Lords, and I can't figure out exactly what the point of them is. They don't buff your army in the slightest, and as far as deadly warriors go they are not worth their points. You have to spend so many points upgrading them, they cost as much if not more than most named characters.

Did you mean to say they are equal to or better than nearly every named character in close combat? Because they are. That's why they cost that. And if you don't want them to cost so much, it's your choice. There's no mandatory costs on them.

"'players must agree how they are going to select their armies, and if any restrictions apply to the number and type of models they can use."

This is an actual rule in the actual rulebook. Quit whining about how you can imagine someone's army touching you in a bad place and play by the actual rules.

When people ask, "What's the point in understanding everything?" they've just disqualified themselves from using questions and should disappear in a puff of paradox. But they don't understand and just continue existing, which are also their only two strategies for life.

so many things in every codex make no sense and are not worth their points.

even more so when the edition changes. Wolf Lords were created for 5th edition when combat was more important.

Rune Priests have gotten much much better in 6th and they were already good.

They are better than most named characters in CC... unless the named characters job is CC. At 200+ points when geared out, though, you have to wonder what they were thinking.
And with new challenge rules, he doesn't even get to kill as much.

They were basically giving you a 'make your own SC' (without any rules) for an edition of the game a lot more involved with melee

Tyranids will consume the universe!!! There is no chance for survival!!
.........eventually anyways.........

Having a warlord that won't kill himself or can survive a Challenge has its perks. And if you take a SC, Logan is the only one that really has the same level of durability and he drastically changes your list on his own. Not everyone wants a Wolf Guard heavy list.

Yes, Wolf Lords are expensive. They can easily take on entire units on their lonesome however, and you can take 1-4 of them if you really wanted to. There are only 3 efficient/competitive builds, but they do let you build your own hero to lead your army.

Honestly, I want to take a Wolf Lord most of the time. I rarely get to though since they cost 200-230 points on their own, and that's another Grey Hunter pack easily. They were priced for a different edition. Combat is still important, but it works differently now.
