Just wanted the opinion of DakkaDakka before I used the bitz and parts. Since the old Broadside models used the smaller XV8 kit as opposed to the newer and larger XV88 body, would I be out of line converting a Broadside from a Crisis suit and Hammerhead parts?

HOW DARE YOU GO FOR A SMALLER SILHOUETTE YOU EVIL MAN I HOPE YOU ROLL TRIPLE ONES EVERY TIME YOU NEED TO ROLL LEADERSHIP TESTS I MEAN TRIPLE SIXES BECAUSE THAT'S WORSE YOU GET THE PICTURE.
But seriously, don't do it. or else I'll come to your house and melt your models.
(I don't have a problem with models being converted for any reason. I don't even mind models that are full prone.)

Let it be known I only played 40k, and the Tau for about 2-years now. I also opted for Hammerheads back in the old multi-tracker days. As a result, I don't own any Broadsides. If it wasn't for the supply shortages and GW charging the life of my firstborne for the models, I probably would have picked up a Broadside or two.
On a side note, is Hammerhead railgun bigger than Broadside one?

people always converted the Guns to be held in the arms like a rifle instead of those terrible back pack versions GW released. They just copied the guys who converted them
But i would say as long as you use the new Base sizes for the models to be placed on then i cant see a problem. Gw Cant expect everyone to throw away there old broadsides just because they felt like a change.
I think the Hammerhead gun will be too big though, Actualy way to big. Even the new Battlesuts dont have one that big. So not sure how it will look. But you never know unless you try.

The hammerhead railgun is definately too big, but you can footle an equivalent weapon out ofother parts, or pick up the Paulson 54mm mech parts.

I've converted a Missileside from a XV8 suit and the spare HYMP parts from the Broadside kit, and I figured you may be interested in some pictures to get an idea of current size differences:
Basically, I'd say it's fine to use the XV8 chassis for an XV88 as long as you put it on a 60mm base (to make the difference clear) and somehow bulk it out. However, the Hammerhead Railgun is way too large to be a Heavy Rail Rifle - judging by the pictures in the Codex, the Head's Railgun is around 5-6" long, compared to the XV8 armour being 2 1/2" tall and the new XV88 armour being around 3" including support weaponry.

you can do whatever you want, just remember if its not obvious what it is and is about the right size (base size is the main thing people look at) you might play against someone that goes "No, thats illegal"
Rule of cool only goes to whoever thinks its cool.
Personally i dont think anyonewould care. Its only slightly taller than normal suits, which can be fixed with basing elevation.
My old broadsides dont have to be rebased if i used the railguns since as per brb they came that way and its legal. But im positive that goes out the window if i use missilesides. Im just removing the rail guns, adding missiles, and a ton of cork plate to raise it up a bit.

Just wondering, did the old Broadsides use the 40mm base or the 60mm one? Also, if GW ever decides to upgrade a model, do players have to switch the bases? I think this applied to Terminators in the past.

The rules assume the model is on the base provided. This means if it came with a 25mm base or a square base you use that. Most tournaments (from what I've heard anyway) require models to be on the current base.

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.

They came on medium bases before, now theyre on the larger Dreadnaught bases (which is silly).
Technically you dont have to rebase any model that gets updated provided you have the original package, as Happyjew said. But expect a ton of fire coming your way, base sizes are a biiiig deal to people. Most dont give a crap about a size difference as long as the base is right....or larger
(if someone complains bout a larger than its suppose to be base theyre an idiot. It hurts the player wayyyy more than it helps unless its a melee freighttrain model or has b2b special rules)

Except for getting a character into contact with as many targets as possible in assault

There is nothing in the rules, afaik, that allow you to rebase your models. Models must be based on the bases they came with, and old broadsides came on 40mm.
My broadsides are still on 40mm and I really have no intention of changing that.
Now, I don't think its appropriate to keep converting XV8 models to be broadsides. There is now an official model and a XV8 is not that model.
