This saddens me greatly. The Warstore was great as I could grab what GW bits I needed and also browse around at the other 3rd party things and tag them onto my order rather than buying everything direct from each separate store.
Farewell...

I like TheWarStore but let's be honest here, their bits selection was fairly underwelming and what they put up on eBay was generally at the high end of the scale. It didn't seem to me like there was any real effort put into it for the past half year or so. I'm suprised it took them this long to close it out.

I got a set of the Sea Guard from IoB as soon as GW's new policy was made public. Anyone who did not see this coming in regards to Battle Wagon Bits(which uses a trade account to get their bits) must not have looked too hard.

They do have one REALLY good deal going on right now - bikes. SM Bikes are going for $40.00 for three on GW site where they are $25.00 for three at Neal's (bits on sprue). They also still have Black Reach Deffkoptas at three for $20.00. Yea, you guys should grab those while they last. I'd grab 'em myself if I didn't already have enough.

What's funny is you still have several bits stores operating like hoard'o'bits or well me battle road hobbies.com so i don't get why people are acting like the world ended on bits. The stores with larger selections are still in business and not shutting down.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House! |

Well, I know that I have been a long-time customer of The Warstore, and I am deeply saddened that yet another facet of my favorite hobby is being completely wrecked by it's parent company. It's only matter of time before the other bitz companies get stamped out, too.
GW must seriously want me to start playing Deadzone and Warpath. Whatever, GW.
I'm hoping to get one more order of bitz from Neal, so I can build a couple more warbands for playing games of In The Emperor's Name.

But for how long? If GW is cracking down on this, you think they won't notice them? At the very least I imagine prices will go up. Even so, with Warstore losing a revenue stream, for no real good reason other than GW pettiness, and miniwargaming actually closing their doors, I would say things are far from all good.

Which would be great if they were worth the effort.
Take a look at the Wae Serpent upgrade kit on Hoard O' Bitz.
It gives you the bottom of a wave serpent for $10. Sounds great... Until you realize they dont give you the rear armour plate for the top of the extended cab.
Now look try to find that one bit anywhere. You can't! So you can buy a WS bottom for $10, a Turret for $15 and youll never be able to finish the model.
By the time you get anything you need from there you'd be better off just buying the actual kit.

Fine, then. I mostly scratchbuild and use other manufacturers for 40K - GW priced me out of their official miniatures looong ago - so I'm not terribly fussed in the end. So instead of trying to show the silver lining, I'll give you what you want:
"Oh GLOOM and DOOM! It's all for naught! Dat old devil GW is taking our bitz, because we are too hardheaded to make stuff ourselves!!" etc. etc.

Hey, remember reading about GW putting out digital versions of a lot of stuff that previously were iOS only? Remember thinking 'Boy, it's sure nice when GW does something I enjoy.'. Yeah. I didn't think that feeling would last long.
(I know we all knew this was coming... frankly I was surprised that BWB was still open after the 1st.)
There are plenty of companies that sell alternative bits though, and as an added bonus some of them even offer entire miniature lines, so this is just going to make more people notice them.

I remember getting most of my bits from Wizard's wall shop, now they shut down. Then I went to the War Store, now you are telling me they are shutting down? Damn it, does GW really think by forcing bit sellers to close down, harassing eBay sellers, and limiting stock to whole sellers that we will be forced to buy whole kits from them directly for the one bit we need. "Oops need another Melta gun, better buy a whole Tac squad box" GW is one of the worst companies I've ever seen in terms of their buisness practices. I hope they continue this so that one day their company collapses and someone who cares picks it up. It's becoming harder and harder to justify finishing projects with news like this.

Games Workshop: Ruining Chaos Space Marines since 2007
First they raised prices on the Eldar, and I did not speak out because I did not play Eldar.
Then, they raised prices on the Orks, and I did not speak out because I did not play Orks.
Then, they raised prices on the Nids, and I did not speak out because I did not play Nids.
Then, they raised prices on the Marines, and there was nobody to speak out for me. |

I honestly thought they'd stopped selling bits years ago. I and most others I know have been going to HoB and other similar eBay sellers. The fantasy selection was particularly lacking.

I don't know if GW has any leverage on the sellers who don't buy directly from GW. Just like there are sites who still sell GW with a shopping cart years after GW said you can't do that, there will be bits sellers just not one who have GW trade accounts. They'll get their stock from the other distributors.

Ya I actually sell the whole parts but you know I'm not worth the effort right . I know I'm not going anywhere for a while and even continue to expand. I personally said when the whole trade deal went down I would not close down and its too bad competitors I liked did but you have to pick your battles.

GW has threatened both stores who work directly from them, and distributers who knowingly sell to bitz resellers.
Bitz resellers can still get their stock, but it's going to have to be further down the line. Thus higher prices to get said bitz.

Distributors take a cut when they act as a middle man between a manufacturer and a retailer, but it's really nice to be able to buy from a distributor and do whatever you want with your property-- break it up, sell it in bundles, sell it online, whatever.
GW was smart to take away the distributors cut for themselves in that it has also allowed them to exert direct control on the retailers who carry their products. "Bad for the hobbyist, good for Kirby's dividend payment!" would be a far more honest tagline for the company than "Games Workshop make the best model soldiers in the world."
|
Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better. |
