So, I am buying/building a Sons of Horus list for use with my
HH 1 betrayal book, but I am really struggling with how to work low(ish) point games in as I'm building out the list and not using the zone mortalis rules in the
HH book (I'd love to, but the
FLGS doesn't have the terrain (yet -- I put a bug in the ear of the owner about that) and I'd probably need at least one other person to get the Zone Mortalis rules -- if anyone knows if they're in a particular
IA book, let me know which one and I'll probably buy it for the store).
I'm not the kind of chap who can/will buy a full army & build it all before playing -- I want to get some smaller games in to test models/strategies/etc. ... and the
FLGS is talking about a 200 point Kill Team tournament for August (0-1 elite and fast 0-2 troop), which is basically completely unworkable with the
HH book (even if
FW rules were allowed

) ... so I am trying to figure out how to use some of the models I'm buying/creating for the
HH list in a "modern" codex environment.
And so far the 'dex that seems to be working best for me is the Grey Knights... lots of possibilities with terminators, the ven dread gives me the load out I think I want with BS5 of a Contemptor Dread in the
HH book (Assault cannon &
TL Autocannon -- psybolt for the
GK list, kheres pattern assault cannon for the Sons of Horus (heavy 6) and a 5++ save) -- the reaper autocannon on the
TDAs looks different enough to "model" the psybolt) and
GK termies w/ swords get a 4++ save in
CC to match the Cataphractii pattern terminator armor of
HH... I could use Justaerin termies with axes to rep the nemesis halberds -- though I would never take the axes in my
HH list... Sons of Horus who outnumber opponents in
CC get an extra attack at I1 -- but not if they haven't attacked yet... so
LCs and power sword/maul it is (and thoughts very welcome on which is better sword vs. maul).
The downside to the
GK list is that their interceptors get a (really cool) shunt move that normal assault marines do not -- and I don't want to learn to play 6th Ed relying on that only to lose it when I go to my
HH list and the extra firepower of stormbolters compared to combi-bolters... I
am considering Dark Angels (for the termies & mixing weapons) as an alternative to the
GK dex.
FWIW.
Fluff wise, I would call my force the Black Knights of Horus -- Horus, or one of his lieutenants, got wind of Malcador's efforts to create the Grey Knights, but did not foresee that the
GK would be held back from the final battle on Terra. And although the BKoH were intended for that final battle, they fell victim to a warp mishap on their transport ship and were shunted into the future where they (and my other SofH lists fighting modern codexes) hope to continue the Warmaster's rebellion against the emperor (though they are not immersed in Chaos as the
CSM are).
Oh, and for the Kill Team tournament, I am going between a
GK 5 model interceptor squad (incinerator and a few special
CC weapons) vs a 5 model Strike squad (psycannon and a few tricks) + Paladin (halberd & stormbolter)
