Hi Dakka,

I've finally assembled my praetorians, and have a 1250 game planned. List as follows:

Destroyer lord (SW,MSS, Orb)
7 x Praetorians (Rod of Covenant)
5 x Warriors (Scythe)
5 x Warriors (planning to reserve these)
10 x Tesla Immortal
6x Scarab
2 x Anni Barge
2 x Spyder

The strength of the Praetorians is in the Rod, as it is one of the few AP2 weapons the Crons have. 6" shooting range is a bit of a drawback, but main issue I can see is that at I2 (I1 because the Rods are unwieldy) and a 3+ save, in CC against anything with a power weapon, they are going to die horribly fast. So, the Destroyer Lord is a must to tank some wounds and take some hits on the way in (2+) then hopefully MSS out a power weapon.

My tactic will be to advance the spyders, scarabs and immortals, while skirting the Praetorians to pick off targets of opportunity (almost treating them like a DE assault unit).

I'm mainly looking for Dakka's views on what successes you have had with Praetorians and any combo's that I've missed. In particular, what points level do you normally bring them in? Also, has anyone had success using Obyron with them?

I already know that wraiths are more cost efficient, so please don't tell me that. I'm looking for tactics on how to use them effectively.

Gonna proxy a few and try it in a campaign I'm playing. Honestly the 6" range and the lack of attacks have kept me away from using them. I think a unit with the voidblade may have more use then the Rod as the Voidblade has Rending and ES which will come into play more often the few times thy will be able to shoot. If you are going to use them I might suggest hijacking a Scythe to get them into the back field faster to tie up or pick of specialist shooters similar to a unit of DM. Though the DM will have a better chance of removing the enemy unit then the Praetorians.

ADD causes my posts to ramble from time to time. Please bear with me.

to my understanding, D-Lords are indeed the best way to run them.

I disagree that the VB and PCs are better than the Rod, because the VB/PC combo is so easily superseded by wraiths. If your going to run Praetorians, run them in their own niche.

They have awesome models and fluff, so I like the fact that despite them perhaps being not the most competitive you are running them anyway.

As for tactics, I sadly lack personal experience with them, but I would advise being fairly cautious with them, as they are expensive.

The more I look at them, they seem like a unit which needs to shoot at something before it assaults. So, in many ways, they are like my GK Strike squads. Shoot first, then clean up most of the rest, finish the job in the opponent turn. Rinse, repeat.

The key thing is that any unit with a standard power weapon will go first and kill them (but at least they are T5). If they had a 2+ armour save or any sort of Invul I'd be a lot more comfortable.

At least I'll get the charge!

Trick is how to do that without getting shot off the board. So, I think use the scarabs and spyders as the main threat, swing them up a flank and that should do.

Actually looking forward to testing them out.
