After a handful of the 6th edition codexs are out now, how competitive are the Necrons without using flyers? Ive taken a bit of a break from 40K, and am looking to start a fresh army again. I really like the Crons, but don't want to have to use flyer spam to compete in local tournaments. Will I able able to compete in tournaments and do well or at least hold my own vs Paladin and Heldrake spam lists? Can I go toe to toe shooting with the new Eldar and Tau? Also, how are the Necrons with dealing with flyers if they don't field any of their own?

I can't comment on tournaments as I don't play them. Couple of quick comments about your other questions:

a) Re shooting, the Annihiliation Barge is a great unit for shooting, and Tesla plus arcing is handy. However, you are not going to generate anywhere near the volume of fire of the Tau.

b) Necrons have lots of options of dealing with flyers, generally by glancing to death. Tesla generally (so again Anni Barges are good), but gauss weapons always glance on a 6.

As a Necron Player who hates the flyers and their shenanigans, I can say that they are still plenty strong. I use Ghost Arks to transport my guys around, and I find that pretty effective. As the Arks are open topped and have the broadsides, you can easily get 30 Guass Shots off a turn. Playing mainly against Tau, I find this effective as fire warriors and pathfinders really can't hurt your Arks. The only thing the tau have that can reliably kill them is hammerheads and broadsides, everything else is lucky to glance them. My two cents.

I do like the Death Marks in a Night Scythe and 2 Crypteks w/ abyssals tho. Talk about kill any troop unit. Hard to get the Death marks in flame range w/o a flyer but that isn't spamming them I only take the one.

I love Ghost arks b/c if they do blow one up and kill some warriors the ark next to it can res the warriors.

The Tau don't have the tanking ability the Necrons have either. They can't put a Lord w/ 2+, 3++, and 3 wounds to take the hits. If you want you can even put the Chronotek in there to re-roll failed saves. I have had a turn of where their whole army fired at my lord and failed to put a single wound on him. If he gets close w/ a war scythe and MMS he can melee anything in the game w/ a good chance of winning.

I think the Necrons are very competitive w/o flyers.

And here's some disavantages of not using NS:

- Besides the NS, the GA is our only vehicle and it only carries Warriors and HQ units. If you want your snipers, Immortals or another unit near the enemy, you will to walk there. Not a good idea.

- Which leads me to the other problem: We are a mid-range army. Pretty much all our weapons are range 24'', a few 36'' and even fewer above 36''. You just can't compete in a long-range "PEW PEW" fight, you have to walk there and give'em hell.

And Tau have no need of tanking. If their troops aren't behind cover, someone is doing it wrong And a Riptide at the center with FNP attracts and survives a lot of firepower.

Mostly true. But, Necrons have access to sufficient DS options to mitigate this (veil, ghostwalk) (back to 5th ed we go!). I often use these methods cos I don't have that many Scythe models. It adds an element of risk but that's fun!

I guess you could do it in 2k. Opens up more points for ABs. 6 Barges anyone?

You can NEVER have too many Annihilation Barges.

While I have not played in a tournament yet I have had luck with a list that only has 1 NS loaded with immortals, sometimes a Destruktek.

You need at least one NS It's certainly NOT cheesy to bring one or even two NS to a game. Idiot's might give you crap for it but eh... IMO the cheese list is 4+ flyers in a small game.

Whilst they are a good unit and hard to shoot down against guys with a decent save or a save + a FNP or daemon save they are much less effective.

If you want a good alternative...

Try using Obyron and Zandrekh + Veiltech seperated in 2 x big units of warriors. Leave them behind a wall as far away from the enemy as possible and wait for him to split his forces.

Then Veil behind him and wipe out a couple of units!

No Fliers at all!!!

Been thinking of a big unit of Lychguard with an Overlord and a cryptek with veil. You port them in and they will shoot at it with their entire force most likely(specially gun lines that are so common now). But don't think it's easy to kill T5 3+/4+ unit with a 4+ ressurection. Can even soak a few shots with the overlord at 2+/3+. 90 fire warrior shots on you when the lord is in front would do somethign around 1 wound on your lord and then kill 6 lychguard which 3 will stand back up. If you have a big unit with 10 lychguard you will still have 7 of them left after all those shots+your lord and cryptek. Then if they shoot their missile pods aso you might loose a bit more but you do have inv saves and 4+ ressurection so 75% chance isn't it to stay alive per wound he makes.
Then it will wreck that gun line all without fliers
