Indeed
The thing with Tau is that the Troops are split into 2 things: The Swiss Knife Kroot that have a lot of options, and the Heavy hitting Firewarriors who is basically the best IGQ in terms of firepower.

IG: I prefer vets with three plasma, plasma pistol, and auto cannon shoved into a chimera. However, a full infantry platoon (as one troop option) is a lot of minis on the board.
PCS w/ commissar and four special weapons/power weapon
Inf squad x5: w/ commissar, special weapon, heavy weapon team, power weapon.
Heavy weapon team x3
Special weapon teams
Conscripts
So, that is111 iinfantry modes, 14 of those are heavy weapon teams. Just a lot of models. For one troop choice.

Lately I think the best troop choice in the Chaos codex is the Cultist. Why? Because the mandatory 2 troop choices only cost 100 points then, and those guys can still man the quad gun and bring 20 scoring wounds. I bring the other 2 troop choices from allied books. Both IG platoons and Vets are better than CSM/ NM/ PM, not to mention allied two Necron Warrior squads which bring Night Scythes with them for more flyer and mass S7 goodness. The only way to be stronger than Chaos, Necrons or Tau, is to bring the best of two books of your choice. Frankly, Marines aren't that good, but Obliterators, Heldrakes and Khorne Lords on Juggernaughts sure are.

BA
Assault squads.
Jump infantry with 10 guys and 2 flamers = 200p
(or 2 meltaguns, 210p) and possibly something for Sgt.
Expensive, but so is pretty much everything in BA Codex.
However, the mistake most BA players do is underestimating Tac squads...

First of all, the problem are not many 'one size fits all' troop choices most codex's.
Lets say your playing CSM. Cultists are great deck chair units. On the other hand, plague marines are amazing at mid-field. You would never want to tie up plague marines as backfield objective holders, and those 10 cultists will get shredded in mid-field.
Asking "Which is best" is not valid, because often you will want to take both.

Tbh Cultists are perfectly good midfield units as well assuming they have a Lord in the unit to make them Fearless. I regularly see 2 x 35, 1 with a Khorne Jugga Lord with Blind Fury and 1 with Abby. Those can wander into midfield up to an Aegis Line and hold ground pretty damn well, not much wants to assault them since you tend to get pulped by the characters (literally nothing wants to fight Abby and the Khorne Lord only has to be careful against S10 guys who hit before him). Sure you hurt the Cultists, but there are heaps of them (so it takes a while to kill them off) and a couple of extra small units in behind them can grab objectives as well. In the mean time your 3 Drakes can wander round flaming everything to death and win the game for you.

Chaos Daemons...gonna go with Pink Horrors here.
Versatile firing modes, cheap, fearless against shooting, able to go to ground and become super durable, 5++, able to deep strike, fear, and options for all sorts of reward shenanigans.
And most importantly, you can just fingerpaint them any bright color and it'll look like a pink horror.

I'll list all the codexes I've read. I'll keep separate force multiplier troops.
SM: Definitely Tactical marines. However, As far as troops are concerned, they're subpar.
FMU: Bikes. Effective bike squads that can choose to fail combat. Not as good as hit and run, but still a solid choice.
DA: Tacs again. Although they aren't as bad as 'nilla marines.
FMU: I'm gonna say RW personally here. DW are nice, but RW just have better rules IMO and are more flexible.
GK: Nothing. All the standard troop choices are terrible.
FMU: Don't make me choose... they're all so good! I have a soft spot for Puifiers.
BA: Assault Marines. Hands down the best troop choice in any standard marine codex, not including FMUs. Who wouldn't want to field jump infantry as troops?
Necrons: Immortals take the cake here. Roll Sixes and win.
Eldar: Windriders take the cake. However, storm guardians are an example of a good forward scoring unit. 12 in a serpent can go after a poorly held objective (held by kroot for example.) Also, Warlocks make most troop choices better.
Tau: This is a tough one. Kroot are an absolute necessity since fire warriors are gak at taking the upfield. However, Fire warriors can do just about anything vs. a Toughness value, and are also decent at making flyers jink and tanks hide. I'll give it to Kroot though, kroot are useless but they can hold that vital objective.
