'lo to all
I'm very new to 40k and haven't got my own codex at the mo, so I was wondering what are the rules about what your limits are in an army, besides points? I know about needing 1 hq and 2 troops, but is there a limit to things like elites, heavy support and fast attack?
Thanks

Yes there are limits to the other categories as well. Also, new to this edition is the ability to take an allied force from another codex as well.
With allies you will likely run out of points long before you run out of slots in your Force Organization Chart.
Have fun and dont let the forum negativity get you down.

You don't need the codex for those, as the force organization chart in the rulebook lays out all of that for you.

This. The Force Organisation Chart (page 109, was it? somewhere near there) tells you how many of each slot you can take total.
The Codex then breaks down what units fit where, and what their points costs are. Be aware, though, some choices can be "free" in terms of FOC slots (for instance, if you take a Space Marine Captain, you can also take a Command Squad that is an HQ unit you still have to pay points for, but doesn't use up an FOC slot).

And that certain characters/units can cause other units to change which FOC slot they are in eg. Chaos Lord with a mark unlocking their respective cult troops, or a land raider moving from heavy support to dedicated transport with terminators

There are also some codex's that allow you to take more than one HQ, Space Wolves being one and I think Daemons have something similar (haven't gotten a good look at it).

Basic force org is
Required:
1 HQ
2 Troops
Optional:
1 more HQ
up to 4 more troops
0-3 Fast attack
0-3 Elites
0-3 Heavy Support
Certain characters and upgrades can change how your force org works, or move units from one slot to another. For example, a Warboss lets you take a single unit of Nobs or Meganobs as a troop (usually they're an elite)

Which explains why I've seen so many "1999+1" point lists. I always thought that was weird.

Optionally.
You aren't required to use two force orgs at 2000+ points.
