A stormraven was about 20 inches directly in front of a squad. The stormraven moved 24" the previous turn, zooming. It suffered a penetrating hit, and was stunned forcing it to only move 18" and cannot turn. On the next turn this forced the base to partially cover a squad. Is it wrecked? This is how we played it.

You played it correctly.

Confused?

How is it 20" away moves forward 18" and still on top of a unit?

The OP title says "Lock Velocity" but he really meant "Stunned" result on the vehicle damage chart.

Yeah, that's what confused me, was going to say it should be locked at 36", not 18" but that's a bit irrelevent now.

Yep, that's exactly correct. A single grot standing 18" away is the biggest threat to a stunned flyer. An entire army full of AA guns can fail to destroy it, but the single grot is 100% guaranteed to kill it just by standing there.

Since this is incredibly stupid you would be entirely justified in proposing a house rule to fix the problem.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

I've also heard of nid players that spread out gaunts in a checkerboard fashion to try and catch flyers in the same fashion.

I try to do it every time. Normally though I either fail to pen, glance them to death, or pen but miss the stun.

I've created at least 4 situations I can think of where my gants would've killed a Flyer if I'd stunned it.

Isn't the base of a flyer supposed to be ignored entirely?

While being tyranid I dont like flyers and particularly hate stormravens, I hate such slowed stuff even more.
so when such situation arised in recent local turnoument where I was assistant TO, I voted for the flyer not beind destroyed for passing over a grot but forced to fly over it so that it clears the units underneath.

Not entirely in all cases. You still cannot within 1" of an enemy unit. Thus the crash and burn if you get stunned and are directly in front of an enemy 18" away.

The base is also considered part of the model even if it can be ignored for a lot of situations. For the final position to be valid, by the 'flyer and other models' rules, you would need to fit a model between the model and the tabletop. I wish people luck when they are in this position, given that the gap between the base and the table top is measured on the electron level. Clearly no model can safely fit underneath the model, at least at this point on the model, so they can not evoke the one rule giving permission to end a turn over top of other models.

It is not a valid move for the flyer to end directly on a model, friend or foe, as the only way for the second model to be on the table at the same point is if it is standing on top of the flyer's base which is not allowed.

8th made it so I can no longer sway Tau onto the side of Chaos, but they will eventually turn aside from their idea of the Greater Good to embrace the Greatest of pleasures.

Here is one. i saw in a tournament a player that did the almight cheese tervigon list. by turn 3 there were so many gants spread out across the board, the fliers could not move, and were technically destroyed...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
The list is now banned from the mentioned tournament...
