Hey guys,

My space wolf army uses their 40k colours but are armed with 30k bolters and some heresy era armour. I was just wondering if Russ was still about when they changed the colour of their armour? Or if it would be fluffy to have legion colours mixed in ad well as if they had just returned from hunting Magnus or are being reinfoced by fresher companies.

As for Chaos, it varies. Thousand Sons only changed their armour colours when Ahriman stepped up as their leader some time in the last 5000 years.

The Dark Angels changed it after Calbian was destroyed to honor their lost home world. It is green now in honor of the forests.

Not sure where but I read that those sorcerors still loyal to Magnus retained the old Legion colours, while those loyal to Ahriman changed to the newer blue scheme.

Luna Wolves changed to a sea-green to honor Horus when they were renamed "Sons of Horus" They changed to black to expunge his memory from their Legion out of shame/disgust (depending on the source) - Also Abaddon's Justaerin elite wore black.

Dark Angels went green to honor Caliban after its destruction.

I'm not sure either, but Ahriman: Exile shows the switch happening.

I thought the space wolves had dark grey armour during the heresy and then changed to the grey blue. Or is this not the case?

They never did change their armour. The change was the 40k painters painting them blue (they used to be a grey colour).

I cant remember who painted the new "baby blue" scheme, but it is he you can blame for the change of colour.

If you want to stay true to their lore though, you can just paint them grey like I did. The Vlka Fenryka never adopted the Codex Astartes and had no reason to adopt a new colour scheme.

Deathguard and World Eaters changed their armor as they became corrupted

Emporer's children havent really changed, other than to add in more sonic and pleasure enhancements

Alpha Legion changes all the time, to blend in with whatever chapter they are infiltrating(I am not sure why Alpha Legion would ever use their own colors)

Night Lords and Iron Warriors never changed.

Word Bearers changed at some point, probably when their faith changed

Not sure if it's official but in the HH visions book the Thousand sons have blue armour when they are meeting with all other traitors aboard the Vengeful Spirit(?)

I thought that the World Eaters never did change their armour colour, they simply didn't bother to wash the blood off it and it became permanently stained red.

There's a mention in one of the short stories in 'Age of Darkness' that members of the Legion had started to repaint parts of their armour red following Istvaan.

Unless that's been changed at some point, they actually repainted for the assault on Caliban, so they could tell Loyalist from Fallen.

Not saying this isn't true, just that if it is, it doesn't make much sense. The returning Legion were caught by surprise by the Fallen's attack as they entered orbit - it's not like they would have had time to go repainting all their armour before retaliating.

That sort of depends on how long they waited before retaliating...

According to Know no Fear, Word Bearers were wearing bright red colours during the attack on Calth, and that was new to the Ultramarines. The official explanation was that it was to honour their new commitments.
