Focused Dark Angels Land Raider Pilot
|
I'm sure this is a plenty frequent subject. What's a good answer for painting block? I keep staring at the dozen Deathwing terminator models I have to paint and literally not wanting to touch them. Knowing that I have to Land Raiders and a Dark Talon after doesn't help much either.
I've tried to alternate characters between units to help. I've done up tanks (Rhinos, Razorbacks) and still I find myself not wanting to finish up the army. I even pulled out a Warmachine model and painted that to completely clear the palette, trying whole new color schema on it. The models are partially assembled, primered, and ready for initial painting pre-assembly. I even sat down and assembled and magnetized Belial to add him to the list to do something with my hands that was constructive. Hell, I even pulled a Reaper Bones mini out of my Vampire box to do something utterly different.
I feel like I'm just sick of off white/beige, with having done 20 other Terminators and having every single special character be robed in the same color.
I still have fun painting black space marines. Hell, I had fun painting the off-white on the Menoth warjack I did. I just don't know.

Blocks are horrible. Been there a few times.
You can always just power through them, or do what I do and paint everything else and then get back to them later.

Three Color Minimum

I just got past mine, just having those models stare at you accusingly...not fun.
Sounds like you've tried alot of the usual tactics.
The main thing I find is to get the ball rolling, painting the model you dread is always had before you begin painting - once the paint starts to flow it becomes easy and enjoyable again.
Good Luck.

You may be suffering from depression - I've struggled with it for years and it seriously affects how much hobby I do.
If you think this may be the problem talk to your doctor about it.

Small goals will help with the pacing.
Make of list of all the things left to paint. Break it into smaller chunks. Maybe five models at a time for termies.
Put them on the list, once thing at a time, alternate between types.
If you need more details, but rough time goals (squad 1 the first week, tank 2 the second) etc.
I had a paint a huge army, and was getting burned out and intimidated by the huge amount to go.
But when I broke them up into smaller more manageable chunks, it went much faster, and by alternating the things I worked on, it did not get as monotonous.
Sure, you may have a big list to work through, but as you get items completed - you will gain a sense of accomplishment and this will motivate you more.
best of luck

Most important thing is not to beat yourself up if you miss a goal.

You say its just a problem really on the termies you have left in primer. Why not just put them away for a bit, and focus on other projects. If you don't NEED them painted for like a tournament, don't try to force it right now. Paint some bones. Come back to the other stuff later.

Go and do something entirely different for a while? Read a book, watch some films, take over the world and forget about painting. Then when you get bored of that the models will still be there waiting for you to rush back into their sweet embrace

What if you made them into a variation squad?
Something I like to do with my Eldar is incorporate both aspect colors and craftworld colors. Now, I'm not a very good painter, but if you take a look at my Gallery (at the swooping hawks) you might see what I mean.
Consider this: A project within a project. Who says they need to all be bone all the time? Keep the bone color for, say, shoulder pads or helm or some such then, or even make it the predominant color, but incorporate other colors into it. Perhaps this is squad is... I dunno, predisposed to using a lot of autocannons. Give them a little bit of leadbelcher across their armor. Or maybe they distinguished themselves on Altidus Septura, a water world, and you can add oceanic themes across their heraldry. Granted I'm making this all up, but it's a thought.
I've found when I'm having trouble with a particular squad, after having already painted their clones so many times before, I assign them to a new Aspect Shrine on my craftworld. Keep Ulthwe colors, but change their accent colors, the washes I use, etc. Black and Bone appear everywhere, but so do splashes of green, orange, teal, purple, etc.
Hope this helps!

When this happens, I find i have to step away, and do something totalyl different for a bit. Painting models isnt my only activity
I might go see friends, or play a computer game, or just watch some garbage on tv... whatever it takes to takeyour mind off the painting for a bit, and when you get around to returning, there not ruined by lack of care, and your mind will be fresh
Art is something that cannot be forced. If your not in 'the mood' then it might be a waste of time trying that particular day.
This happened to me lately when i forced myself to continue painting and had to strip the whole unit and begin again...

Thanks, guys. Appreciate the suggestions and have taken the last couple of days to get away from painting and do some other stuff like play Path of Exile and download some old favorite computer games from the GOG.com summer sale.
