Subject: New player, need help to pick my 40K army

Hey folks on Dakka Dakka
When i was around 10 years i started to paint WHFB Orcs and Goblins, but never got to play with them. After 2-3 years of painting and a few victories in a couple of painting contests I stopped.
Yesterday I found the old green creatures after they had collected dust for 4 years.
So I unpacked them and played with them for an hour and decided I wanted to start this fun hobby again!
I want to try to play 40K, but i am having a hard time deciding which army to pick and play.
Here is what I like, and i hope that you can help me point out which army suits me the most
- I like different and detailed models.
- I like a fun army to paint
- I like a fun army to play
- I like an army with variety
- I like an army with a high skill-cap (big difference between a good and a bad player)
I hope you would like to help me with my decision as i am quite new to the 40k world!

First of all, welcome to Dakka.
As for the army, my first thought would be Eldar.

Fun models, lots of variety, a high skill cap? Sounds like you should go Sisters.

Going from your list of likes, I might suggest chaos? Both space marines and daemons?
Can't really comment on what's fun to paint, that's different for everyone, but there would certainly be variety. Some lovely models and I imagine as fun to play with as the next army.
And as much variety as there is, you can't still build and paint some really cool themed, fluffy armies that look great and uniform.

Thanks for your quick replies!
I have a pack of Chaos Khorne Berzerkers but I do not like them, they seem dull to paint imo.
I think that the eldars too look kind of dull to paint due to the fact that I need to paint most of them 1 color.
As far as SoB I do not like the fact that they are in such small numbers.
I have been on GW's website and i think that following armies look cool:
- IG
- Chaos Demons
- Dark Eldar
- Tyranids
- Space Wolves (dislike that there are very few troop choices)

Both relatively untrue. Eldar have the harlequins, easily the most complicated to paint models in the game. SOB can easily go horde with IIRC, the option to take 20 woman squads. Unless that's changed or something.
But welcome to dakka!
I'd recommend for variety Black templars (They mix scouts into their tac squads for example) and perhaps Imperial guard. In the end though of course its just down to which you like the look of, as remember, you can paint them anyway you want, eldar don't typically have a uniform 1 colour, I'd look into biel tan, green and white, very nice imho.

I think that the Dark Eldar looks like a lot of fun.
I have heard that they are underplayed and if so, that pleases me a lot.
I have also heard that they are one of the harder armies to play and that falls in my taste.
I might find a cool color scheme and buy a pack of them or two.
Does anyone have any advice as for what packs to pick up first and a suggestion for a cool scheme?
Thanks a lot for the help guys, i really appreciate it!

I'd just go from Orcs to Orks. You can scratch build an army unlike any other; they're amazingly fun to craft, paint and play. A competitive build is possible but not easy cheese. (Hooray for horribly outdated codeci!)

If you want fun painting I can promise that, unless you have a regiment made up of different regiments, painting imperial guard is one of the hardest things to do if you want a fully painted army.
I'd recommend Chaos Marines despite the fact you left them off the list.

First, welcome to the boards! I read over your likes and the armies you are considering; the only army there that I have extensive experience with are Tyranids. I can tell you that they will fulfill your painting likes - The models are beautiful and you are open to experiment with any color palette you wish. On the gaming side, though, they are VERY limited. You can build lots of fun, fluffy lists with great models if you don't mind getting beat a lot. If you wish to be competitive, though, they basically have one build, so I don't think they will fulfill your high skill cap listing or variety likes. I have been hearing rumors that they may be getting a new 'Dex early next year (fingers crossed for this), though.
