I haven't read to much of the BL books but I'm thinking about getting the HH models for my Blood Angels. I feel like it's a bit of a silly question because I understand all of them had each version of the armor but I'm not sure if there were if certain legions had more of one armor over another. What my question is is which legions had certain armors and what were they and did the Blood Angels have a favored armor version?

Fort Hood (Tx)

They all had different types, The Vets tended to have older armor. I think the Mrk III armor was made for space combat though.

Around the time of the Heresy, most Astartes used either Mark 2 or 3, with Mark 4 typically reserved for veterans and elite units. They would also be field-testing system prototypes for the AdMech, which would eventually become the Mark 6 and 7 suits. Mark 5 was a semi-formalized stopgap design to refurbish damaged suits during the war.

Horus used his influence as Warmaster to redirect supplies of Mark 4 and prototype wargear to the legions loyal to him and keep the rest undersupplied with the good stuff.

From memory, Toward the end of the heresy, the loyal legions were getting mk6 suits in increasing numbers, so you could do a blood angels force in full mk6. Having said that, the original Epic scale game was based around the horus heresy and everyone was in mk6

Early Heresy Blood Angels would have mostly been in MkII with MkIII for certain frontline units as MKIII was a reinforced version of MKII. They would likely have had some MkIV but not much. Most of the MKIV armour went to the traitor legions thanks to Horus' alliance with the Dark Mechanicum.
During the heresy they would have had to use old suits and patch up existing ones as resources were scarce.
Siege of Terra and I think the three defending legions were all given MKVI (beakie) armour. It was also around this time that the first MKVII armour appeared so some of the BA could have looked like typical 40K marines at the end of the Siege.

Awesome to know!

What about heresy armor? It's my 2nd favorite armor version. Who used that the most?

The old armour fluff article (WD129, but it was up on the French GW site as until the 4th edition cull) stated that MkV entered production almost overnight once the Heresy began - actually being issued extensively to units sent to Isstvan V. It remained in production until MkVI was introduced towards the end of the Heresy. I imagine all of the legions standing between Horus and Terra would have been extensively re-equipped with it by the end.

I think for the most part its better to have a good mix of the Armour. It looks a lot better than being all one MK. Lots of artwork and things can be looked up to help you make your derision, Read Fear to tread, One of the very few Blood Angels novels in the Horus heresy series. I haven't reached that far yet im just finishing Fulgrim. But if you read Fear to tread it may mention the sort of armour that they where wearing at the time. Sanguinius Was a Very proud Primark, Very Looks orientated, not as bad as the Fulgrim and his shiny Purple Tanks. But very similar, So if you read it, you may get some inspiration for your pre heresy Blood angels. If i remember at the HH weekender. They mentioned that White scars and Dark angels are not even listed until Book 7 of the HH campaign. And I don't expect you will see a proper listing for Blood angels until then either.
But having said that even Art work, that is well renown gets it wrong.

For instance.

This is Talos Captain of the First Claw Night lords. Being visited by Abbadons Psk (shortly after Abbadon shoots Talos with a Storm bolter at point blank range)

This is one of the more popular art works of Talos. But fluff wise it is totally wrong. In Soul Hunter it describes Talos Armour in great Detail. The lack of skilled artificers being able to produce new Armour is slim to none, So they take what they can get. In the story's Talos is described as having one of his legs in the bright Yellow of an imperial fist, after he stole part of the leg Armour. His chest plate was taken from an Ultramarine. And I seem to remember him having a gauntlet white in color, cant remember if it was from a white scars or some kind of elite troop.
