I saw that Vassal has been updated for 6th edition, but I haven't seen anything about the Eldar. Does anyone know if there is data out there for them?

It takes a while for them to update in a new army, even the tau isn't fully updated yet. So you'll need to proxy the newer things like Wraithknights.

Yeah it'll take a while. I've been using Trygons for Wraithknights (Same base size I believe?) and Warlocks for Spiritseers.

Think it might be better to use the GK knight instead.

I started this thread under the assumption that I would need an updated version with the new rules in it. I'm just now finishing the install, but I saw while Googling that Vassal doesn't contain the rules and that I'll need to use my Rulebook and codex with it. I'm still not sure how that will work, but I'm glad that I can play at least once I get used to this. Proxying sprites doesn't bother me at all.

Between

Basically, Vassal is just a table, a set of models, and a set of dice. You need to track and handle everything else yourself.

It doesn't try to be 40k: the computer game. IT's 40k: The tabletop game that you can play with someone in Minnesota.

The Vassal40k team is kind of overwhelmed by GW's new pace of codex creation, so expect them to be lagging pretty far behind.

Actually it's mostly because there isn't any real 'team' it's people who make things and put it in when they have time.

Wow Vassal is much easier to use than I expected! I played a small game yesterday and found it pretty straightforward. It's easier than Excel or AutoCAD, thats for sure. If anyone cares to play sometime PM me here.

You don't as far as I know. But while looking up Vassal people made it out to be difficult and it wasn't at all. I was just pointing out that it's easier than any professional suite.

Last I checked the Vassal mod was current up until the latest DA book.

Along with Chaos Daemons.

I think they have separate people working on each race as they can.

It will get done. Give it time.

After hundreds of hours of Vassal, I am beginning to get really burned out on it. Some of my big pets peaves:

1 - It takes far too long to play a game. Average amount of time for a 2K game is 4 hours, and this can be in the 5-6 hour realm for large horde armies.

2 - Players disconnecting. I can't tell you how many times I have had 2-3 hours invested in a game, and the other player drops because things aren't going his way.

As a tool to test certain builds against each other, it is pretty solid. But I find the thought of logging in and playing a game painful. Part of this is probably because I already work in front of a computer all day......

My peeves with vassal :

1) No way to properly determine LOS

2) Too long to play a game. I swear it adds an hour

3) Dice algorithm is messed up. It's completely possible to roll the same number 5 times in a row. I've seen it happen.

For me Vassal is a good deal faster to move my nids in a nice orderly line. And then argue for about an hour about what counts as Terrain or not. And then get hit with the standard temptation to click another window and do other stuff while waiting for the opponent.

Yep, another problem with vassal; it's hard to pay attention when the turns take bloody ages. At least irl there's human contact and you can admire your opponent's paint job.

Also physical models and dice >>>> digital models and dice.

I see vassal as a way to play with very distant people rather than as a true replacement for FLGS, Basement, and Tourney play.

That too, although even when I don't have time to head to the FLGS or invite a friend I can always play my Space marines, chaos forces, tyranids, orks, and imperial guard against my wife's Tau, Eldar, Dark Eldar, Her Chaos forces (only daemons), and Sisters of battle. As you can see we have pretty different tastes in armies.

I've seen the same happen in real life too, dice are fickle, hateful things.

Yes, but it happens more often in vassal.

I would agree with the dice algorithim comment. The dice in Vassal are suspect to say the least.... Still playable, but makes you wonder.

All in all it's not worth it. It is a minimum 2 hours longer to play a game, and there are a lot of other issues (LOS, disconnect, really slow play).

If I was living in Alaska or somewhere with no 40K players, I may be inclined to continue. Personally, I would rather spend that time painting my forces. I could have had an entire additional army painted with all the time I have spent on Vassal.

I disagree, went one game (not 40k) where I rolled 32 1's in a row.

It's actually probably better, due to the lack of human hand rolling that can work on it.

Hope you rolled them all for leadership.

I've only played one game, but it seems bearable enough since otherwise I can't play if I don't travel four hours and spend about 100 USD on train fares. It does seem to take a while to play, but it's really the only way I can play more than a few times a year.

Vassal is pretty much made for people like you. So glad you found it.
