Hello everyone, so after a long hiatus I decided to get back into the game. I would always admire Necrons, so I decided to pick some stuff up.after reading some diffrent things on the forums I did find that they are super"super competitive. I know by posting this I will open the can of worms, but is there list out there that are not so crazy and that I could play for fun? Were I play is a fun place, I don't want to show up with 18x wraiths and be that guy. Should I just save them for tourney play or should I dig deeper and try to make them for fun play?

What's stopping you from not running wraithspam if you don't want to? I'm not running flyerspam because I chose not to, no one came to confiscate my necrons for playing it wrong... Not yet anyway. Most units in the codex are competent/good/verygood, there's no reason why you need to play super competitive if you don't want to.

You don't have to run wraithspam.

General word of advice when it comes to list building on the web - ignore everything you read, and go with what you want.

You could always go old school Silver Tide necrons

with Ghost arks and res orbs, with Spider Scarab farm

Generally speaking almost everything in codex necron is good save flayed ones.

just dont take flayed ones and you should be ok

Unless you are playing a Dark Harvest list. Only then are flayed ones worth it.

Welcome to Necron club. We have some rules here: the first rule is that you don't talk about Necron club. I'd love to tell you the other rules, but that would break rule #1.

Its a fun club!!

I have been playing around with a lot of different builds as of late just ot have fun. I replaced all my wraiths with heavy destoyers and a stalker behind and ADL.

People were so use to the wraithwing that it really threw them off. Funny to see that kind of firepower in a necron list.

I also have been doing some silver tide. Large warrior groups backed by ghost arks.

Just make your own list! My cousin brings a mono and lychguard in every game! I see a lot of people say don't take em but they rarely do him a disservice.

By the way, "omg my army is too strong! How do I not spam the best units?" Is just silly lol

I tried making the wraithwing work. Believe me I tried...the biggest problem I seemed to face was they either got doubled out or shot to death via small arms fire...and my inability to roll above a two. Also, god help you if they have null zone or are able to cast enfeeble...

It's a shooty meta and necrons know how to shoot with all kinds of fancy dancy guns (gauss glancing armor, abysal staff teaming up with deathmarks, tesla for the extra two hits, voltaic staff that can take out a LR by itself). Until Tau came along I was content in playing a heavy cron air list with death & despair units. Just had to get past that first turn with almost nothing on the board

Wraiths, in fact all Necron assault units, need to be lead by a Destroyer Lord with 2+ save. This will allow the unit to survive the shooting phase and get into assault as close to intact as possible.

Thanks for all the advice. I was just worried i picked up a one trick pony army :(. But I guess all armys have that one tourney list.

I hear ya but that could be problematic especially with DE and those darn venoms or drop podding lists, etc...

I have two of them and I think they're great. I usually run one when I run a doomsday ark or a monolith. great synergy

I run a Tomb Stalker, it's great fun if a bit fragile. ^^;

Can't wait to run it into my mate's Riptide and tear him apart... although sadly, as of IA12 we can't use LoS-blocking cover to assault without getting overwatched any more. :(

Nah mate, use a sentinel. You can hit with the exile beam

Granted, you only have a 1 in 6 chance of killing it, but there's something oddly gratifying about sending a mecha into the negative zone.

Necrons, as with any other army, can be good or they can be bad as well. It really depends on how you want to build it. The reason you see a lot of competitive necron builds online is because many people want to know how a competitive necron army is like. But just because they run them doesn't mean you have to. Play with whatever you like or whatever level of competitiveness you feel is appropriate in your locale. Personally, I don't normally run a really competitive necron spam-list anymore unless I am practicing for a tournament or if someone requests a matchup against them.

Some of the better/more competitive units in the book include:

- Destroyer Lords
- Overlords
- Immotehk or Zandrehk
- Crypteks
- Deathmarks
- Night scythes
- Wraiths
- Scarabs
- Annihilation Barges
- Spyders

If you really want to go competitive, you then spam the above units. However, taking some of those units in a normal list is alright as long as you don't spam them.

The difference being that I own a Tomb Stalker, but haven't had the chance to get a Sentinel yet. :p

As people have stated go with what you like, I usually take LG and a Monolith and a Doomsday Ark, despite everyone's whining on here they serve me well. Experimentation is the key I've yet to field the same list twice because I want to try unit X or vehicle Z.
As regards what you own, you're well set there for the flyer/AB spam many cron opponents despise, it will win more games than friends believe me. Just try stuff out, read the fluff and see what appeals, you'll work it out.

The most beautiful thing about my Crons is that almost every unit is playable <3
Every list that I have played so far uses another tactic and combination.
Now that IA12 is released my possibilities quadrupled, I'm loving it!

My latest experiment was a melee-based list against Green Tide-Orks
It was all about Lychguards with Trazyn and some RC, scarabs and a Tomb Stalker.
I really wish that Flayed Ones were always troops, that would have made my day!

Conclusion: Even without spamming flyers, AB's and Wraiths you will have a decent chance at beating the opponent and you are almost guaranteed to have fun.

My only problem is that some people in my group have this hate against Necrons.
They are a top tier tournament-codex and therefore all units in the codex are overpowered according to them >.> the whining and misinformation is really painful.

The one good thing I will say about Matt Ward's recent 40k codexes is that there's hardly any dead weight units (except for Flayed Ones for the Necrons). So if you just want a fun list, just flip through the book, find something you really like for whatever reason, and run it.

Wow, thanks for all the advice. I was just worried thar people will hate, I in fact love the fluff and the stories behind them. I purchased the army befor I knew what they could do and just have been reading about the hate, but getting really into it I see that daemons, Tau, and plenty of other armys have hate to. Just
Seems that this ed is competitve, and that I chose the right army for it!
