Hey guys, this problem has been hounding me. I'm going to be starting a WoC army very soon, and I like a lot of the models and options. Mono-god themed armies are always cool, but I want to be able to mix up my choices and units... and more importantly, I want to do it while keeping a coherent color scheme... not red guys over here, green up here, but this guy is pink, and the knights are blue. This isnt a true rules question, so I think it falls to this forum; people who paint or at least care enough to notice other people's design choices.

How important is it that a Warriors of Chaos player paint his Khorne-marked units red, Nurgle in green, etc? I was considering a heavilly themed list, where the theme isn't one of the gods. Do you think there will be any trouble with people saying 'Woah, wait, -1 to hit? They aren't green! If I would've known they were Nurgle I would never have charged!'... one idea might be to make it clear on their standards, but with a heavily themed list I'd rather put my own symbols on those. Thoughts? Thanks.

Use infantry bases you probably have lying around.

Paint the symbols of the chaos Gods.

Use the corresponding base near the unit that's marked by that God.

My 0,02 cents

Wow, that's not a whole lot

It's not important at all. Just let your opponent know when you're presenting your army list, and whenever he/she asks.

I had this exact same question, it drove me nuts. In fact it drove me so crazy that I ended up not going with a Chaos army. I couldn't find a way to merge the practicality of having different marks with the fluff and at the same time having a coherent painting scheme that tied the whole army together. I wanted to paint an undivided scheme, but it just didn't feel right having the unit marked. I then thought of going mono-god, but I just felt like I couldn't build the list that I wanted without straying too far from fluff.

If you figure it out, I would be really interested to see how you end up painting them.

I'm not a fantasy player but maybe just add a model that has a small banner/shrine on him indicating which god they follow and magnetize that thing?

As the previous poster said, paint all your units in a unified manner and then paint their banners to match their marks. Your army will look great and the banners will make it obvious to your opponent which mark they have.

Thanks for the replies, a lot of good solutions here as to how to convey which mark they have, but I'd like to hear a few opinions on the more fundamental question: Is a WoC player even -obligated- to make a show of what mark a unit has, whether it's through paint or symbols or whatnot? Is there a rule or precedent somewhere that says you need to represent marks visually? Thanks again, good answers thus far.
