A unit of Bikes may Turbo Boost. This is not a Run move. Are some bikes free to shoot while others Turbo Boost? Note the improvement to the Jink save (+1) is on per model basis. So RAI it is possible to boost one bike
in front to tank with an improved jink while the rest of the unit shoots?

It's a tough question, because the Types and restrictions on them seem to change to based on models and based on units randomly. I'd say it's allowable.

Does one bike get to make a special move and another not? Does any unit get to do this? No.

Little tip: when you think you are pulling some shenanigans, expect to be wrong.

I'm unsure what you mean.
A regular infantry squad can let all members apart from the heavy weapon dude move, and then fire the heavy weapon at full BS. Isn't this the same thing?

Models move individually in the movement phase (as in your example with a heavy weapon). But Units (not models) run (page 14). Can you run with only part of a unit?

Whilst Turbo Boost does not use either the words 'unit' or 'models' (page 45), it is likened to running. I suppose it should be discussed with your opponent beforehand.

Actually, yes, one bike may Turbo-Boost and none other if it wishes. Here's the quote:

"Bikes and Jetbikes cannot Run, but can make a special Turbo-Boost move, instead of firing in their Shooting phase."

Notice that it does not say that the unit makes this move, nor that it follows all other rules for Running, therefore, any bike model can perform a Turbo-Boost.

So yes, certain bike models may Turbo-Boost whilst others can shoot.

Jink however is a cover save.
So it's a simple case of using Focus Fire to avoid that one turbo-boosting bike at the front, and shoot the rest of the squad.

Vehicles in a squadron can do this for flat out I believe. Plus jet pack models in a non-jet pack unit may jet pack move while the others stay still (drones attached to fire warriors) so, there is precedent.

As gredel pointed out though,

If you do this you are only shooting yourself in the foot. Not only would the turbo boosting model lose it's ability to fire, but the enemy can simply ignore the benefits gained completely by focusing their return fire. It may even do a great deal more harm, if you have special weapons or attached independent characters hoping to use the boosting models as meat-shields.

Not necessarily. Sometimes it's helpful to turbo boost everyone except Sammael so he can pop off his plasma cannon shot while everyone else gets 2+ jink.

I'd focus fire on sammael then. Nice way of letting me snipe him Depends what other saves there are and such, of course. But unless he has a 2+ that I can't remove, that's what happens.

Then the return focus fire is being given a pseudo-precision strike, with all wounds being assigned to your HQ because you can't allot the wounds to the cover-saved vehicles.

Well, Sammael DOES "only" have a 3+, but that comes with T5 and Eternal Warrior. So it's actually a pretty good way to let him TANK some wounds against the right units.

So... page 45, nothing in Turbo-Boost says you have to move the entire unit. Page 47 states you must for Jump Packs, so it stands to reason if Bikes were the same, you'd have similar text in there.

Plus jet pack models in a non-jet pack unit may jet pack move while the others stay still (drones attached to fire warriors) so, there is precedent.

This particular one is false, check page 47. The rule specifically states a Jet Pack "unit", not individual models.

I think he probably mistook jet for jump pack. As I think you did in your statement too, since Page 47 states that you use jump packs on a model by model basis. "If a jump model uses its jump pack..."

Sammael is a total bullet sponge. He's never my Warlord either so feel free to shoot him.

It stands to reason yes, but this is 40k. Bikes are bikes and Jump Packs are Jump Packs. It seems RAW you can.

I don't want to reopen that debate but do keep in mind the term 'Jet-Pack unit' and 'Jump unit' are still referring to individual models because it is talking directly about a unit type, which is an individual model characteristic.

You just did But it's talking about a unit of that unit type. "A Jet Pack unit that is not locked in combat or charging can move up to 2D6 in the assault phase"
I'm not sure I follow, but are you saying "Jet Pack unit == model (of the unit type Jet Pack)" ? Because the Jump rules go to great pains to differentiate it by calling them "Jump model"

Yeah but even in the Jump section starts out staying 'Jump units can use their jump packs...' before going ahead to give rules on how those jump packs work. This means even with the use of the word model in those individual rules, you still have the term unit lingering over head. Permission to evoke these rules only exists to jump units, not to individual models equipped with jump packs, so it doesn't matter that they talk about individual models within the rules themselves.

Also the special rule section uses the term Jump unit when giving special rules such as Bulky and Deep strike:
Does that mean, if joined by a deep striking independent character, that the original jump models magically shrink in size and lose the ability to deep strike?

If you want, there is a thread floating around where I go into details about terminology, the use of the English language, how many rule would be broken if they where not talking about individual models and the whole lot. If I was better at using the search engine here, I would find it for you myself. Sadly, I end up with more results searching with that thing then I would have simply flicking through the pages one by one to find it manually....

No, it means that they are still bulky and could still technically deep strike, except that those rules don't allow a unit that can deep strike to do so if there is anyone in the unit that can't.
But I see where you are going, and although I don't strictly agree with *all* of it (while I might have after some back and forth) the-thread-that-shall-not-be-mentioned sucked the willpower to argue a point out of my bones so I'll just leave any argument that isn't clear as day for now. Let's agree to disagree.

I could argue quite a lot on the topic, but I have already done so in the past and do not want to do so either. So let us both just shake hands and walk our separate ways without another word on the topic. If we have to come to an agreement on something, let it be this: The editors should have sent the whole section back to the writers, telling them to make it 'model types' and to make the rules within more precise.

I'll shake on that.

It seems you both missed the important line out. Page 47 again...first paragraph under Jump Packs...
"Note that the entire unit must always use the same form of movement."

The part that concerns me more is the special rule section, designed to give individual jump/jetpack units special rules. These are not all rules benefiting these models either, bulky has negative effects and nothing positive about it. If the word jump unit means a unit consisting of only jump models, then these special rules go away soon as you include a independent character. Given that these rules are all model related ones, not unit wide, it makes no sense for them to exist with a 'unit wide' limitation.

But this is me, walking away before that debate gets started again....
