Not something I've done before, but is there still a place where you can buy some decent GW bits from online (other than eBay, whose bits ain't so good)? I'm making a kill team of sternguard who absolutely positively need lots of combi-weapons.

Don't discount eBay just yet... I use Blackdagger Games and have always been happy with my purchases: reasonable price, decent shipping, and quick delivery.
You could also convert your own. There are probably tutorials out there on how to do it.

I love Blackdagger games, the last order i placed arrived on my doorstep in 2 days!!
|
It is the 3rd Millennium. For more than a hundred months Games Workshop has sat immobile on the Golden Throne of Nottingham. It is the foremost of wargames by the will of the neckbeards, and master of a million tabletops by the might of their inexhaustible wallets. It is a rotting carcass writhing invisibly with business strategies from the early Industrial Revolution Age. It is the Carrion Lord of the wargaming scene for whom a thousand veteran players are sacrificed every day, so that it may never truly die. Yet even in its deathless state, GW continues its eternal vigilance. Mighty battleforce starter-sets cross the online-store-infested miasma of the internet, the only route between distant countries, their way lit by a draconian retail trade-agreement, the legal manifestation of the GW's will. Vast armies of lawyers give battle in GW's name on uncounted websites. Greatest amongst its soldiers are the Guardians of the IP, the Legal Team, bio-engineered super-donkey-caves. Their comrades in arms are legion: the writing team and countless untested rulebooks, the ever vigilant redshirts, and the writers of White Dwarf, to name only a few. But for all their multitudes, they are barely enough to hold off the ever-present threat from other games, their own incompetence, Based Chinaman - and worse. To support Games Workshop in such times is to spend untold billions. It is to support the cruelest and most dickish company imaginable. These are the tales of those times. Forget the power of sales discounts and Warhammer Fantasy Battle, for so much has been dropped, never to be re-published again. Forget the promise of cheaper digital content and caring about the fanbase, for in the GW HQ there is only profit-seeking, Space Marines and Sigmarines. There is no fun amongst the hobby shops, only an eternity of raging and spending, and the laughter of former employees who left GW to join better companies. |

Why would you say eBay doesn't have 'good' bits? I get everything off there pretty much exclusively. Hoard o Bits, Blackdagger - they have it all pretty much.

Rare, in demand, parts are expensive, combi meltas are about as rare and expensive as bits get until you get to vehicle hulls etc. hardly anywhere has them in stock for long, and, unsurprisingly, the cheapest tend to sell out quickest.
There are some 3rd party alternates (Chapterhouse do a magnetised kit with all three variants) but if you want the GW ones, be prepared for a fairly significant outlay in time and/or money.

are you dead set on the pre-made combis? I'm sure you can kit bash some really nice looking ones from the bits for sale. Unfortunately, combis are pretty rare to begin with and will be a) harder to find and b) command a higher price. I feel you pain as coming across the Catachan Command "beret" heads hasn't been so easy....

You are also looking for some of the least produced bits GW makes. There is one plastic combi-melta and one plastic combi-plasma in a space marine commander box and the Finecast Sternguard come with one each as well. There is also a Finecast Sternguard Weapons pack that has one of each That's it. The only other official GW combi-flamer is a resin one made by Forge World as part of their Character Conversion Set.
So you are either going to pay a lot of money for one bit or you have to make your own.
Try this: combi-melta, combi-plasma, and combi-flamer
