In your opinion is a 5 point cost worth a 6+ invuln save?

Additionally, what are your thoughts on the the storm shield? Do you think that the 20 points for a 3+ invuln save, yet losing the additional CC attack worth it when being given to an assault oriented HQ or assault sergeant?

I am not mean, I just don't care about your feelings. If you can't take constructive criticism, then you're just a sissy.

A storm shield is great for multiwound models, especially when paired with an unwieldy weapon. It's a huge waste on single wound models.

Combat shields are ok if you have the spare points for single wound models, but I'd rather buy melta bombs for the same price. Definitely not a must buy item.

I don't think I'd do a Combat Shield unless I really had nothing else to spend on. The storm shield *could* be effective, but you'd need a hard hitting sergeant with it(think powerfist), and I'd only take it if you find yourself in a lot of spots where the invul would have saved you in your local meta. With all that...That's a very expensive single wound model.

Put simply, Combat Shields are useless. Not even worth the 5pts investment.

Buying Combat shields is... Kinda almost worthless, usually.
Buying Storm shields is good on multi wound models; single wound guys will almost never be worth it.

Meh, maybe as point-fillers.
I've used one with my Assault Squad Sgt. and my usual experience:
in 4/5 games completely useless, but then comes this one game where enemy fires plasma at me and my sarge makes 3 6+ saves protecting the whole squad and keeping the objective

So combat shields are nice if you have 5p you don't know where to spend. Storm shields only on termies or maybe captains.

If you have access to Feel No Pain, a PF/SS Sergeant is surprisingly durable in a Challenge against single model units if his squad has at least 5 other models. You can expect to grind down a Tervigon, for example.

It's still a niche tactic.

I had one assault BA Srg with a LC and a SS. He is suicidal (as all BA are) and will challenge enemy HQs to tie them up. He once took 3 rounds of cc with 5th Ed Eldrad. I was so proud. His body now rests in the hallway of Heros.

But more seriously he is a novelty left over from old habits formed during previous editions. I don expect him to do too much, but he is there as an irritant. Sometimes he gets lucky.

I think they only reason combat shields are even an option is because the Assault Marine kit includes a shield, so they kinda figured they may as well include rules for it.

The combat shield should have been a 4++ in close combat only for 15 points.

FWIW, the Horus Heresy rules give combat shields a 6++ and 5++ in CC and assault marines get 'em for 3 pts each...

3 pts for a 6++ 5++in CC seems worth it to me, but for for more than that (and/or just a sarge not all of the squad) I don't know that I'd bother -- as others have said, the 5 points also gets the sarge meltabombs, which seem like a better investment

Ya this sounds infinitely better than what it currently is.
