After recently starting warmachine, I have come to wonder which primer I should use. This is mainly because I have never primed metal models and want to know which primer will work best for both metal and the plastics for warmachine/hordes. Any insight would be nice.

I just use the Citadel Chaos Black spray. I don't know if it's optimal, but it works.

I use a general all purpose primer i got from a hardware store (not all are good for this though) , so use whatever product has worked for you before.

I have found that P3 is a really fine primer in terms of thickness. GW tends to be thick. I still need to test others to give a good opinion though.

I've heard army painter works well from a friend who uses it. I personally just use the cheap walmart brand flat white. It works surprisingly well.

My favorites that I've found over the years are GW chaos black and P3 white. I've pretty much stopped using all others and continually use these now.

I've recently started switching away from spray primer. On my latest Warmachine models I've used Liquitex black gesso. You can paint it on with a broad, stiff bristled synthetic brush in just a few minutes and it dries quickly and holds paint quite well.

Plus there's the benefit of primering when it's not nice outside.

At first I started with Citadel Chaos black, and then moved to P3 formula black. Got much better results when I tried out P3 because it was a bit cheaper for 10 USD.

Another Walmart supporter here for the black. For white priming I like Duplicolor Sandable White Primer from an auto parts store.

Thus, After having thus successively taken each member of the community in its powerful grasp and fashioned him at will, the supreme power then extends its arm over the whole community. It covers the surface of society with a network of small complicated rules, minute and uniform, through which the most original minds and the most energetic characters cannot penetrate, to rise above the crowd. The will of man is not shattered, but softened, bent, and guided; men are seldom forced by it to act, but they are constantly restrained from acting. Such a power does not destroy, but it prevents existence; it does not tyrannize, but it compresses, enervates, extinguishes, and stupefies a people, till each nation is reduced to nothing better than a flock of timid and industrious animals, of which the government is the shepherd

Auto sprays tend to be superior to other (non miniature) sprays in my opinion. I am jealous of all you people who can prime in black, my eyes just cannot see depth in black :(

Krylon white/black/ruddy brown primer. Not primer and paint, just primer.

No wargames these days, more DM/Painting.

I paint things occasionally. Some things you may even like!

Same, though I may have to try priming the jacks with the Army Painter silver, that would save a good deal of time in getting them to a tabletop state of completion.

Army Painter. I used to use the black, but have recently switched to using white instead. I reccomend Army Painter to all the customers at the flgs. It's one of the very few things my boss has given me permission to upsell people on, as he does not like upselling to customers.

I've used GWs and a variety of flat black paint. Now I usually use Rustoleum Painter's Touch flat black and primer from the local Home Depot. It is much cheaper than most of the rest and works as good or better than the GW stuff.

I have used a variety of paints from the craft stores and they usually suck bad. Though I use Krylon matte spray #1311 for my final clearcoat. Available at a lot of craft stores.
http://www.dickblick.com/products/krylon-1311-matte-finish/

It really depends on how good of a painter you are and what quality you are going for. Painting a golden deamon? Get the good stuff. Want quick, inexpensive table top quality? Paint from the home depot would probably work fine and you could get 3-4x as much.

Like the rest of your painting tools. You can spend a lot of money on high quality stuff, but most of us are probably painting at a tabletop level (and are just fine with it) so why waste the money?

+1 for Vallejo's polyurethane primer. I airbrush it on straight from the bottle and it's absolutely flawless.

My dad does some mechanic work as a hobby, so I usually just head out to the garage and grab whatever kind of automotive primer he's using at the moment.

I've done some 40k stuff with it, and I think the auto primer is a little bit too thick for fine detail, bot it might have been me getting generous with the spray can (and with my level of painting it didn't matter much anyway)

I cast my vote for the Duplicolor Sandable primers. I've used white and black so far and both have worked great. I also have some white Gesso that I mix with black paint and water down to brush on if I don't feel like or can't spray.
