I just recently acquired a few necrons from a friend of mine and was looking for some advice on how to build a decently competitive list. After looking over the codex for a while I'm not sure where i want to go with the list tactically, but i like the look of lychguard with HS and DS. I also like the sound of Trazyn.

I have 20 warriors
2 c'tans
5 immortals
3 destroyers
1 monolith
1 overlord
1 Ghost Ark
5 scarabs

What would be a good way to build from here if i wanted to include the lychguard and Trazyn and still be competitive? Also I don't see many monoliths in the lists i looked over, are they not practical?

I would suggest you start with a couple of ABs. You get the Olord with the kit, so it is a nice little added bonus.

The mono is okay, it even got a slight bump in the last FAQ updated but it competes with something far better and cheaper... the AB.

you can bring two AB for the cost of one mono.. its AV13 so only a smig under the mono... it just does more jobs than you get out of the mono.

Alright thanks! I can definitely see advantage in having two AB's over one mono. I know with my eldar i've found more success in running a transport for every troop choice instead of leaving them to run around by themselves, should i stick to the same idea and pick up more GA's or does the higher toughness of necrons make foot patrol more viable?

Trazyn w/ Lychguard isn't particularly competitive, that's not to say that it isn't a bad idea, and Trazyn's obliterator will be nice against orks and nids and how often you use it to its greatest effect will depend on your local meta. Regarding the lychguard, they're tough but slow and are easily outclassed by the Destroyer Lord w/ Wraiths unit, which is arguably one of the most competitive units in our codex. If you take lychguard, put Trazyn with them, if you don't, put Trazyn with a unit of immortals.

For maximum points efficiency imo, I'd drop Trazyn for an overlord w/ an Orb, but that's entirely your call.

If you have 20 warriors and only one ghost ark, I'd get another ghost ark.

The monolith is impractical. You're essentially paying 200 points for a large AV14 building with a 24" S8AP3 large blast that can get stuck in dense terrain, and block your LOS. It's not worthless, but the Anh Barge is extremely efficient for how expensive it is.
We can, for example, compare the Anh Barge at 90pts to a Rifleman Dread at 120pts, because they are somewhat similar in the sense that they fulfill an anti-heavy infantry/light vehicle role and both fire 4 S7 twin-linked shots at BS4. Twin-linked tesla is something like 130% accuracy, so you're bound to hit 5 times for every 4 shots you fire, and the Anh Barge has AV13, additional maneuverability, the tesla-destructor will arc into nearby units, jink and a cannon (which should always be tesla, because you're almost always going to want to shimmy your skimmers in the movement phase for jink) underneath.

Because so much of our arsenal is 24", I think it's a good idea to bring some heavy destroyers, which have a 48" threat range with a S9AP2 gun and preferred enemy.

C'tan are way too expensive to be really competitive.

It's probably a good idea to always bring a group of scarab swarms to whatever game you play, they either tarpit a unit or eat some tanks.

Some Tomb World in some galaxy by that one thing in that one place (or Minnesota for nosy people)

GAs work with most lists but I just prefer footslog because our transports are expensive.

Msu warriors and NS works well I generally have 2 in every lists no more and no less it seems to be the perfect number from 750 to 1850 which is the normal sized games for my FLGS

Automatically Appended Next Post:
I prefer to use trazyn with a royal court disco dance style list because on top of all the threat that a royal court gives it is scoring as well but can be bogged down by hordes which trazyn deals with quite well so he basically completes a royal court which makes it near unstoppable it curbstomped the last tourney I went to (except for tau but I don't think that counts)

Thanks for all the help guys! I'm excited to move forward with a list now and I feel i can do so with a little more confidence/understanding now. I'll probably be back soon with more obvious questions for you hardened necrons here. Happy wargaming to you all!

Just a quick one, if you are getting a box of Lychguard, get another box of warriors if you can afford it. (I assume you will use the overlord out of the AB box for Trazyn?). You can use some of the warriors plus the praetorian bits out of the lychguard box to kitbash up some crypteks (Praetorian heads work ok).

Actually, if you had the cash, grab:

AB,
Warriors
Lych
Immortals.

Then build

5 Lychguard with Swords and Boards
5 Immortals
5 Deathmarks (use warrior legs and chests - with the chests, you just need to file the back of the chest down a bit - arms don't fit great but they are ok).
Crypteks (number at your discretion)
