Hi, Dakkadakka'ians.

A newbie question, but sod it, we were all new once.

I had my first bash at using Green Stuff last night - that stuff is stick-aie!

I was trying to make weapon slings for my Guards' lasguns, but I couldn't get the hang of it. The stuff kept sticking to the sculping tool, even when wet, and it wouldn't flattern correctly; instead of having something that looked like a sling, I had a worm of various dimensions and direction.

Surely there's a trick to it?

I realise that I can probably use other substances to make the slings, but I'd prefer to try and use Green Stuff, for now at least.

I've not done lasgun straps, but made rough rider reigns like this so it might help.

roll out the green stuff into one really thin thread, then using a knife, cut off as much as you need, then gently lay over the shoulder/arm/wherever and press the ends onto the rifle where you want it to be held from.

Use vaseline as a lubricant for the tool, not water.

Once you get the desired shape, allow it to sit for a while. It will stay flexible for hours, but you want it to cure slightly. Ideally, you want to be able to wrap it around stuff without your fingertips distorting it.

That's really useful to know, ta. Although I'm surprised that GW haven't brought out their own line...

Another thing you can use is KY... it's water based and cleans off easier than vaseline. ;-)

I'd LOVE to see GW repackage some KY for model use...

Saliva also works better than water. (Yes i lick my tools)

And letting the GS cure slightly before applying is probably the easiest solution. Just make sure that you use a surface where you can get the semi cured GS off without damaging your work.
Or if you want to let it cure longer use glue drops to stick it to the model.

I've done this only for cloaks but it's a similar approach. Add vaseline onto a smooth surface, roll the GS onto it and cut the straps. Let it cure for some time and add the cut out straps onto your weapons.Apply a tiny drop of glue onto the points where the strap should stick to get a better and longer lasting bond. And it's also easier to attach it that way. Just add superglue to a needle and apply it with the needletip for better control.

@btldoomhammer - Apologies to the OP for the slight hijack, but which glue do you mean here? I'm using Revell Contacta Pro, the liquid solvent stuff, and I'm curious to know whether I can re-attach cured or un-cured GS to a model, even after it's fallen off. My current experiments say no, but if it can strengthen the bond when the GS is still 'fresh' then I can avoid this problem altogether! Seeing as you're the King (or Queen - I don't know ) of Greenstuff, I'll take your words like the 10 melon-fething Commandments!

Superglue will stick uncured gs to a model and create an instant hardened surface, so be careful

The contacta pro stuff is poly cement is it not? And therefore won't find anything in gs to dissolve.

I thought as much Flinty - my experiments to date have been... disappointing. It was no biggy anyway. Cheers for the advice.

The number of sculptors I know that use spit is ludicrous. Now that's something I'd like to see GW repackage...

+1 to this.

Poly cement won't touch greenstuff (which is an epoxy putty). Superglue WILL bond to it very well, and you can reattach GS to a model with it. Try to clean off any superglue on the model first, as superglue DOESN'T bond very well to itself.

It wouldn't really help down here, for example. They expect you to buy their lube before they bend you over?

Well, here we go. My first attempt at Green Stuff. Not too bad, considering.

My Company Command Squad:

My Company Commander:

The idea behind this is that he's speaking, or yelling at someone, while snapping off a shot with his pistol.

Vox, with sling.

Plasma gunner with sling. The plasma gun was made by combining the plasma gun and arm you get in the Command Squad sprue and a standard lasgun.

The idea behind this guy is that he's got a double-barrled lascarbine. It counts-as a lasgun, though. I tried to give it two muzzles and an additional magazine/power cell well on the side of the receiver. Just experimenting with GS really.

I think you've done a good job, considering it's the first time. Your slings have come out quite smooth. Keep up the good work!
