Can't get on Steam at the moment (not that I need to anyway, seeing as I already have them all, even Blue Shift and the original "Uplink" demo...)
But, what's exactly covered by "the complete thing"? Half Life 1, 2, both...?

You mean Black Mesa, right? I wouldn't say it's outright better... I'd say it's more tolerable with current gaming expectations. In other words, you won't get the newbie complaints of "the graphics are poo" or somesuch.
The remake was done very cleverly... it's different in certain places so that even if you know the original like the back of your hand (and I do), you still get a fresh experience. So my suggestion would be to play the original, *THEN* play Black Mesa.

Been playing a lot of Black Mesa of late.
Would thoroughly recommend it. Its extremely well done and as stated above has subtle level differences that make it shine even more.
There are small bugs, some ladders are bugged and certain AI units too (girl assassins in the hanger level) but overall well worth the free download.
Half Life one is a classic no doubt but graphically it hasnt aged well (obvious I know).
Black Mesa loses very little if anything imo and updates the entire engine with GFX, sound, levels and models. Go forth and enjoy it.

Personally, I don't mind the graphics of HL1. I'd be disappointed if it was a recently released game (of course), but as it is, I know what I'm getting and it doesn't bother me.
Like Color Sgt Kell though, I preferred HL2: it was a more varied, emotional and immersive experience IMHO. Although both are great.

"As I recall, your face was tortured. Imagine that - the Master of the Wolves, his ferocity twisted into grief. And yet you still carried out your duty. You always did what was asked of you. So loyal. So tenacious. Truly you were the attack dog of the Emperor. You took no pleasure in what you did. I knew that then, and I know it now. But all things change, my brother. I'm not the same as I was, and you're... well, let us not mention where you are now." - Magnus the Red, to a statue of Leman Russ
Considering it came out almost 15 years ago, I'd say Half-Life has aged extraordinarily well, but I also started playing PC games when Wolfenstein 3D, Blake Stone, and Doom were cutting edge. It's all a matter of perspective.
In any case, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are two of the greatest, most influential games of all time, and I don't make claims like that lightly.
If you like PC games, particularly first-person shooters, and you haven't played them yet, you really should.

The centre of a massive brood chamber, heaving and pulsating.
Is the PS2 version of Half-Life any good?
