You could get blood angels, count them as space marines, and then use them as Blood Angels again once they get their 6e codex. Given GW's new pace of codex writing that shouldn't be too far off.

Also inb4 Martel's needless pessimism.

Well, what fits you best and looks pretty much are personal, subjective things. Look at the models, look around and it is kind of up to you to determine what you think is best on that account, really.

Competitively, currently vanilla Marines (Salamanders, etc) have a slight advantage over Blood Angels. This is not so much because of what SM has as the effects of 6th edition on Blood Angels. That said, both armies can operate well in the right hands, but Space Marines will present a lesser hurdle to high-end competitive play.

Also to note, Marines are expecting a codex update soon, so that could introduce new styles or changes that could completely change that situation.

Find a successor chapter that uses similar colors so you can switch out at will.

I'd wait till the new SM codex drops, then see if it sways you one way or the other. I gotta believe they are going to do some cool stuff for them, based on the last few codices that came out.

Use space marines with blood angels allies, or vice versa. Or else, just create a custom chapter with a look akin to salamanders, but as a blood angels successor chapter.

wait so do salamanders get like an extra buff or just a colour scheme also with the others like white scar, iron first etc.

Salamanders, White scars and Ultramarines share the same rules. Marines are more or less marines, there is nothing that stops you playing black templar colored space wolves as long as you declare what codex you use beforehand.

well salamanders get buffs if you include vulkan in your list...He is kinda expensive but you get enough for the points.
He gives twin-link to melta , multi-melta, flamers and heavy flamers as well as master craft all thunderhammers.
He is no slouch either in combat although he is not that much of a beatstick.

Nah, i was just making an example to show that you can play every kind of marine with every codex you like. For a beginner I would not recommend Black Templars tbh because of the anciet codex.
The regular Space Marine Codex is the most versatile and has a good reputation but will be updated soonish.
Blood Angels were one of the best rulebooks in the old edition, nowadays they have a reputation of being too expensive and are regarded as weaker then before.
Space Wolves are pretty strong mid-range shooting with decent melee.
Dark Angels are pretty much similar to the marine codex if you want a power rating.
Grey Knights were another powerhouse in 5th edition and suffered because of the transition but still are very, very strong.

But in the end you can paint your marines however you like and play any codex, noone is unplayable.

Unfluffy White Scars (Khan, Stormtalons, Thunderfire Cannons), drop pod Salamanders, and then Blood Angels, in that order.

You should wait and see what happens with the upcoming C:SM and White Scars supplement first, though. And you can still be competitive with BA, especially once they get a new book, it's just a lot more difficult.

I think Blood Angels will be waiting a while for their Codex yet. Probably not as long as Eldar and Tau waited for theirs, but we are still a mid-late 5th book so there are others that should come first (Orks, Tyranids, Dark Eldar, Black Templars, Sisters...) - so we're looking at too long to be worth waiting before starting.

Mephiston can be substituted as a "counts-as" Librarian with the default Force Sword and just given an extra plasma pistol. He won't be anywhere near as killy but at least you get use out of the model, and Librarians are really useful at the moment. While that may change with the new Codex, the rulebook disciplines themselves won't change.

I think your biggest problem will be exactly what units you take. Assault Marines and Vanguard are just terrible in the current Marine codex, though they may get better, it's not worth banking on in my eyes. If you were going to get lots of Tacticals/Scouts instead anyway, then this is a moot point.

Are you looking for competitive armies for tournaments or competitive amongst your friends?

IMO - If you want to play Blood Angels - play blood angels. They are still a 'winnable' army.
For example - Meph kills monstrous creatures and artillery easily - with his psychic jump pack and not much psychic board denying he's quite hard to stop.
Fragioso's in drop pods are good, baal preds are good - you can build a good fun list.

I personally love the Salamanders - vulkan, lots of th/ss and flamers is great fun.

Its because ordinance is still a word.
However, firing ordinance at someone isn't nearly as threatening as firing ordnance at someone.
Ordinance is a local law, or bill, or other form of legislation.
Ordnance is high caliber explosives.
No 'I' in ordnance.
Don't drown the enemy in legislation, drown them in explosives.
