My son is starting his vanilla space marine army. He is in love with the dreadnoughts and wants couple with drop pods.
Now here's my dilemma. Their not shipping any IG tanks or artillery due to models being re-worked for the up coming codex...and in wondering if their gonna do the same for space marines....so should i go ahead and buy...or wait to see if they get new models?

If the trend of codex updates holds, you should be fine getting the basics.

Even if there is some radical codex change, I find it very hard to believe that basic Marines, Dreadnoughts and Drop Pods will instantly become unusable.

Well since GW doesn't seem to be doing an Anual Price Increase this year, but when ever something gets a new codex, that is when the price is increased.

So with the rumours of SM coming out end of Summer, I would get what you want now, so you don't pay for it when the new release and it comes with a price increase.

They don't usually remove units from the codices when they update them, if a unit is removed the model will just get rolled into another unit. Necrons pariahs got removed in the new codex but you could use the model for the new lych guard.

I'd buy, look on ebay if you can its usually cheaper if you get lucky. The instnat they redo the SM codex those prices are going to skyrocket.

I doubt droppods or dreads would be worthless in the upcoming codex anyway. Theyre already kinda gimped on the competitive side and are a huge part of that codex, and they will probably want them to sell again. Wouldnt doubt it if they redid the stats on the big dreadnaught to make it an MC or something, actually.

If it's in plastic, it's pretty safe. GW isn't really in the business of updating old plastic kits, as can tragically be seen by things like the Eldar Jetbike from the early-mid 90s that is still for sale today. IG tanks are pretty safe; the Basilisk might get turned into a combo kit with something like the Griffon, but Hellhounds, Chimeras, and Leman Russes of all flavors are modern, solid kits that aren't going anywhere. The only things that currently exist that I'd expect to see new models for are resin units like the Thunderfire Cannon, and maybe, MAYBE a new Predator kit. I'm probably just wishlisting that one though.

Vanilla marines have access to 3 types of dread right now, its doubtful any of the kits will be changed. As others have mentions prices go up at release now due to the much faster pace, so if you want them grab some now.

Under current rules dreads are not viewed as "competitive" so you can probably score some on ebay cheap. Going a step further you could probably get some very low cost AOBR dreads and one full kit for the extra weapons. The AOBR dreads convert pretty well so you can make them chapter specific or customize them without fear of ruining a more expensive kit.

Guard are only getting a new artillery kit because the codex is 5 years old, and they still haven't realeased artillery models for guard yet.

It's pretty unlikely that there is going to be some super huge rework of dreadnoughts in the future, so it's pretty unlikely they'll get a new kit. Even if dreads did get reworked, it would take some 5 years to get a new kit...

Definitely buy now. As mentioned, they're likely to be cheaper before the new Codex than after. They're also not likely to be withheld from ordering - Marines sell a *lot* of models so it's not as though the stock needs to be run down or anything.

One thing worth doing, though - either magnetise the arms, or use blu-tac or something similar - whatever you do *don't glue them yet*. Dreadnoughts themselves will still stick around and while the options that exist are likely to stay available, they may not be as useful - or there may be new options you want to try instead.

+1 to this as well.

I expect Drop Pods to become much more popular(hard to imagine with how many already field them) once some unit prices come down to current levels. They are very common to find right now, so picking up two should be relatively cheap and a good start for transport options.

If you pick drop pods i would recommend using a impair number of pods (3 or 5) so that you can drop like 2 pods first turn and the other latter , I love pods and dreads , I like the Ironclad dread , if you like forge world they have a pod that lets you assault in the turn they enter that is also worth a consideration.
