Nurgle Chosen Marine on a Palanquin

A while ago I started working on a custom mini, just for kicks, and because on another forums I have flavor text, "Poops out nurglings". When the 6th ed codex came out, seemed only natural I use this model as a portal glyph herald. I realize that heralds are now on small bases, but I already have 3 on medium so oh well!

This sculpt is 100% original. Here is what the base mesh and sculpt looked like. I used shapeways.com for the printing service, 3DsMax for the base mesh, and Sculptris for the sculpt. The model was originally going to be on a small base, but I lost track of size while sculpting, and it looks a bit silly on a small base. The strange texture on the model is from the printing process, I opted for finer detail print, but the downside was the texture, which made it difficult to do any sort of decent painting.

As requested, here is the link to where you can print your own. The price is comparable to a special character from GW.

That strange texture is a feature, mate
How long did it take you to design it and how much did it cost in the end?

What service did you use to print it? If you use Shapeways, you can actually sell some

I am curious because I just got back some prints from Shapeways' "Detail" material. It was not quite as detailed as I expected, but I'm thinking it's also what you used here?

Looks good for Nurgle

All in all I probably spent about 4 hours on the model, concept to finished sculpt. The print cost about $25. I am going to try to reduce cost of future models by hollowing out some larger parts.

I used "Frosted Ultra Detail" It did a well enough job capturing all the detail, but the detail it got was so small that the frosted effect kind of drowned a bit of it out. Like the nurgling's fingers and teeth. Some friends convinced me to open the model up for sale. Doing my best to avoid GW lawyers.

Wow, that's pretty cool!

This is the first time I've seen a mini made using 3d printing that could easily represent something from GW.

I think I just saw the writing on the wall for miniature gaming...

I think the texture is what gives it the wow factor. It looks like sick flesh.

This is the first time I've seen a full 3D printed model in place of an official Games Workshop mini. The price will have to drop significantly before on-demand 3D printing can supplant purchases from GW. Awesome on you for making your own model.

It is a great job, and I think the texture of it looks fine, but I interpretted the face as constipation.

You can also reduce further by looking into companies other than Shapeways, which are pretty damn expensive at the end of the day.

shapesways print cost per model vs. what you'd charge for casting this mah-f up in resint yourself at home would be good imo!

cause I imagine a that you could even print another master, and then file the texture down a bit, and then use that as a master for casting?

The model looks good, except for the pooping demons thing, that could have been left to the Trygon model, or left out altogether.

I do not think that part looks good at all, but the other parts of the model is great.

(Maybe just have the one nurgling on the ground to hint at the fact that it pooped one out, The imagination is far better than anything we can create).

Don't you mean that it's a printed custom Plague Demon, which is compatible with Games Workshop games?

because one is pretty neat, and the other one is a DMCA request to Shapeways.

So far as the texture - fascinating. I'd agree that it actually enhances it somewhat.

I've submitted my own Shapeways order recently and it hasn't been delivered yet so I'm intrigued with this thread.

I made sure that on Shapeways I was very careful with my wording. I am just using this model that is similar to GW stuff as a stand in for the herald of nurgle

Shapeways takes a while.
