So I've been slowly working on building my own space station terrain to run the "Voidspan Point" battle of the "Crusade of Fire" campaign, and I'm wanting to make it a little bit more like a space aircraft carrier, To that effect I'm planning to set up a line of parked valkyries and vendettas (my cadian flights), but I was thinking back to my pre 40K days building WWII dioramas, and thought: I bet I could make these guys have folding wings like a naval aircraft of today. I would be repositioning the wing based landing gear to be on the body to either side of the stand holder (kinda hiding it from view and working out as a "step" for troops exiting from the sides), using the usual gear location as a mounting for a bolter sponson/missile sponson, and cutting/hinging the wing to allow it to fold up like a Hellcat or Dauntless. Lining them up angeled with a forge world toeing vehicle to move them to the launch pad. I was wondering what you guys thought of the idea.

Sounds pretty awesome. Would make them more obvious as terrain and look less like your guard vehicles tossed onto the table for extra scenery. Not that a bunch of valkdettas would make bad scenery, just that your idea would be cooler.

Sounds like a cool idea. Bonus points if you get some real hardware so you can actually pose and fold up the wings. It wouldn't be too hard to find some nice little brass hinges. As long as you have a nice, clean cut where the wings once met the body, it should be both simple and effective. PM me if you do it! I'd love to see pictures.

Since I am a cheapskate, the only way I'll be doing this is if the prototype model turns out so that I can still use the models in regular games. I may be willing to blow extra to get spare terrain pieces, but I'm not going to be buying 5 extra valkyries just to use them as terrain. My real thought is do I want to get the swivel hinges and set them up like f4 corsairs, where the wing folds up and then back. I'd have to find more of those hinges, though.

Remember from your real world modelling that where the wings fold up there are no weapon hard points on the under side of the wing. On the Valkyrie and the variants you've got the hard points almost right on the best place to fold them, not to mention all the workings to do the thrust vectoring out of the wing tips, and the landing struts are on the wing edges too. Navy aircraft fold the wings to save space. I don't think space is such an issue for those in 40k since the capitol ships dwarf even some of the largest ships in star wars. It is a cool idea, but i don't think it will make sense to do on valkyries. Now, if you had thunderbolts...

What about folding the tail boom over the top as well. Almost make them small enough to be crated up and carried by the skylift version
