...Must be the most stressful thing I keep doing.
This is like my 5th move and I'm already starting to get flustered and this heat is not helping. With less than a day to go all of my crap is sorted for storing and shipping its just like every one who pack buy stuffing stuff in a box I have missed placed important stuff
The question is how (if at all) was your last move?

Black bin bags are the secret here. Just throw everything in them, they go in a van. Then sort the unpacking over the following 6 months.
Other than that: Gin, lots and lots of Gin.
So my last move was a bit hazy and the mother-in-law contrived to reverse a van into the corner of my newly paid for house! Great days.

My last move is my current move. Lol. I had to move 3 hrs away for a job promotion, but in order to look for a place, I moved in with my sister and her friend. Findings have been scarce, and 90% of my stuff is packed up in boxes in their basement. I am also packed up in the basement. It's furnished though, so I'm not complaining.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

My last move was in parts. The Wife and I had just bought our first house, and were moving stuff from out apartments in. Most of it was a car load at a time, renting a local moving truck for the big stuff. Later we rented more trucks and did the rounds of all my relatives in the area, picking up spare furniture from their basements etc. This was also the era where a couple of pizzas and some soda/beer would be enough to get a half dozen able bodied young people to come out and help. I could get the same number these days, but they are not as able bodied, and have better tastes then cheep pizza. One of the problems with getting old.
But there was no time stress. Boxes could be packed, loaded, moved, unloaded, and re-used.
Some of the trips to get stuff were ugly. Like driving a giant moving van halfway across the US in the summer heat with no AC.
If you have the option, have a month overlap between your new/old place. It can be rough financially, due to security deposits, and the double month payment. But not having to have your life entirely packed up is nice.

I moved country on my last move, it was really stressful but it also forced me (a natural packrat) to bin a load of stuff I no longer needed. I'm moving in a couple of days again and it looks to be less stressful due to that.
The most stressful of all was moving to England a couple of years ago because I didn't know for sure if I had a flat at the time I left to take the ferry.

My last move I offered the "army standard" payment for guys from my, and my wife's units to come out and help us... well, 6 pizzas, and a crapload of beer later, only 4 people showed up, so there was a LOT of pizza and beer leftover :(
The next one that's happening should happen later this year, and some people will move the majority of everything across country, while the fam attempt to drive 3/4 of the country in 2 cars with a 4 year old and a 1 year old... should be great fun

Our last move was brutal. We lived in a mobile home, and bought my house. We were supposed to move in here just before Thanksgiving, so we packed up the place with that info. They jerked us around so bad we didn't move in until January 8th. So we had to live out of boxes and ended up missing a Christmas because of the whole ordeal.

I just moved with my girlfriend across half the US. We drove, and only brought what fit in her car at the time. She had to fit all her clothes and everything she needed for work. Only fun things we brought were a TV and our pet rats (still have a gerbil and rabbit to bring).
I get to do the whole thing in a week (goign back for my car and my stuff). Will be fun to finally have something here that is mine though. My laptop has been getting boring.
We moved into my parents house a couple months before this too. Lots of living out of boxes. Worst part is being 1500 miles from our stuff, with little money, in a mostly empty apartment. Luckily the apartment we live in (rent free at that!) was like, 1/4 furnished. Had a bed, couch, some kitchen stuff, and a few end tables. Wish we had a screw driver though.

My wife and I get bored of houses very quickly.. Too quickly it seems. We have moved 5 times in the past 6 years and it never gets any easier. When we move again, around January it seems, I am hiring some frickin' movers. We will pack, then let them hump all of our crap down four flights of stairs in the middle of winter..Ha Ha!
Although the move this time was my idea. I want a dog, so we are moving to a house with a garden.

Still can't find the important stuff but at lest I can put my feet up and have a nice brew.

My last move - I culled a lot of the stuff I no longer needed nor wanted, packed the rest into a ute (pickup) driven by my brother, and made the 2 hour drive north.
That was 7 years ago. I still have stuff I haven't unpacked.

Moved due to the building inspector declaring my apartment building uninhabitable. It was a rush job over about a two week period.
I'm actually planning that next time I move, I'm throwing away all of my possessions that won't fit in my car.

A friend in my old local gaming group did that same thing when he moved from Sweden.
Back to the main topic. I find that packing what fits into your car always seems great, until you realize the amount of models you have takes up the whole car and now you can't fit in anything else. Also it was a pain to bring our caged animals out here, they take up a lot of space in the backseat (rats, gerbils, and soon a rabbit)

I'm ex-military, Moving is nothing new.
I'll be moving again soon, although it won't be far, just across the compound I live on from a flat to a house.
Bin bags, boxes and a borrowed pick up will be the order of the day.

Moving has always been pretty easy for me, as the majority of my possessions have always been either clothes (throw in garbage bags, stuff in car trunk) or electronics (pretty compact once broken down). Any furniture I've had has always been sold, or given to friends.
That said, I finally convinced my parents that people in their late 50's who work full-time shouldn't be doing yard work. Had I known how much of a pain in the ass it would be to move two people out of a house they've had for 20 years I would never have even tried. It also doesn't help that they're shifting from a 1600 sq ft foot freestanding home, to a 1000 sq ft condominium. Granted, much of the pain is just sorting through 20 years of accumulated crap*, but that makes the sorting require that much more time when every other object involves reminiscence.
*Both of my parents, particularly my father, come from relatively impoverished backgrounds. So throwing something out has always been an alien concept to them.

Last move was four years ago. We got some guys in with a big truck. They did turn up three weeks early to start with. The biggest problem was sitting in a small car with a brewers bucket full of fish which we had pulled out of a large pond we drained with buckets the night before. Then the really annoying thing was putting the fish in the new pond and having a heron get them all the morning after and before I could get the wire around the pond.
Best wishes to all the posters moving / about to move.

Fun times:
Bought in-laws house from them.
Packed all stuff in boxes and wrote on box each thing put in.
Called all friends to help move.
Hired professionals to move our stuff.
Held party in back yard with BBQ since we could not get everyone to all get together otherwise.
Moved in, with in-laws still there for 3 months.
Spent the time making father-in-law laugh when I would put something away and be told by mother or wife "That is not where it goes" and I reply "It is now: my house!".
They moved out and 1/3rd of their stuff stayed.
