Hey guys,

I wanted to try out NMM for quite some time now and I thought where better to start than Sigvald.

The problem is he still looks a bit yellow and not very golden. Any ideas where I am going wrong and how I can correct it?

Honestly: Looks like copper by how brown it is.

Even dirty gold is usually much brighter.

yeah thats what I was thinking :(

If I highlighted with a lighter yellow and feather that in do you think I could pull it back?

Much more contrast needed. Your dark tones need to be almost black, and light tones almost white.

Yup, more dark. And more light.

Some useful theory, and clear steps.

That just might be a start. Now add highlights. And consider what direction(s) the light is coming from.

This is coming along nicely....don't mean to sound dumb, but what does NMM stand for?

Non metallic metal. And means just that. Painting metals without using metallic paints. And, daston, this is really coming together. Definitely getting there, well done.

Starting to come along

OK got a bit cocky and tried to do Sky Earth Non Metallic Metal....didnt go so well. I think I know where I have gone wrong and it needs more shine on the top and bottom the shield to give it that polished look, I think this is where I run out of talent lol.

Hell, you're further along than I am. I haven't even attempted NMM yet, let alone thought of SE-NMM, and you're doing a pretty fair job, considering this is (I assume) your first NMM model.

Looking good. Yeah, the shield looks a tad screwy, but that's what makes perfect: practice.

You're on your way, keep crackin' at it.

Why is it that only those who have never fought in a battle are so eager to be in one?

The problem with the SENMM shield is that the horizon isn't gonna be as straight as you have it there. His shield is really convex, so the horizon should be warped.

In the above image, imagine that the kneepad is your shield - roughly the same shape.

The other issue is that the raised edge/border of the inner circle wouldn't keep the same reflection profile as the rest of the shield.

Ahh thats probably why it looks a little odd, will probably start again, after all if it goes wrong I can always strip it.

As for the inner circle I guess the top half of the line would reflect the sky and the bottom half the horizon?

Also - I'm afraid you're gonna have trouble mixing the two techniques even if you pull both off perfectly.

The reason that NMM variants work so well is because they trick the eye into thinking that the model is;

a) Metallic.

b) Not miniature.

Light looks different on small detailed surfaces than it does on large ones. That's why when you paint in metallic paints, they don't look like metal - the light looks wrong at the scale.

But when you reproduce the way that light bounces off large objects with non metallic paint, it makes the model look like it's big and made from metal.

So, with that being said - When you mix the two techniques, the eye has a hard time getting the two 'reproduced light' styles to gel - and neither will look perfect.

In future, try to stick to NMM or SENMM across a single model.

All considering this is your learning experience, it's coming along pretty awesome. It's definitely tabletop worthy already.

I liked the one with just NMM better. Keep trying!
