Consciously intersperse your diet soda consumption with water consumption, and do a decent amount of cardio; anything that get's you sweating. And make sure that after your workout you only drink water or something that has little or no salt.

Thanks for the tip. I've just joined a gym for the first time yesterday morning, and have only really used the treadmill and elliptical. The latter definitely got the sweat going.

Try some interval training if you really want to get soaked.

I'm not sure if you were being sarcastic or not, but weighted carries are actually useful for conditioning.

If you REALLY want to get soaked, run eight miles in 90 degree weather. It's not fun, but it's effective.

Squatting with the squigs

sounds like a potential heart attack, I'm gonna suggest for most people on dakka eliminating soda/coke/pop /soft drink and going for a 10 km walk.

That's a great idea if you're a beginner.

I'm not a health professional, so keep that in mind. I've never exercised with former smokers, so I don't really know.

Probably a 5km jog/run. As the low intensity activity becomes easier, you'll want to increase intensity, however I wouldn't suggest going from a 10km walk, to a 10 km run straight away

On the topic of tracking macro nutrients, do any of you use myfitnesspal.com?

I'd suggest 2-3km jog at most followed by walking another 3km or so. Rushing into running has always led to problems for me. I prefer getting into slowly.

I use an app called Cals and Macros on my phone. I didn't like myfitnesspal.com very much.

Since I don't have a smart phone, it's the best I could find. It does what I need it to, and the food database is very extensive.

Squatting with the squigs

Thanks guys, I'm starting to get left lung pain so quitting smoking (hopefully next week) with exersize will help. I've been eating asian style for 3 weeks in preparation and I have to say weight loss style, asian food is awesome.I'm not aiming for loss just health and I reckon (with every meal being 50% boiled rice) I'll lose 3 kg or more whilst I give up smoking.

less dairy , more vegetables = win ( I'm not sure about the sodium )

I think people give milk a bad rep too. Milk is one of the most nutrient rich things you can put in your body. I guess people are too afraid of the fat.

I just don't eat it as I am slightly intolerent, it makes me sleep or feel ill.

I love asian food as a lack of desert means I enjoy the full menu.

Meh, I don't drink any of my calories anymore. Why drink milk when you can smother everything with cheese or sour cream?

It's not that milk is bad; it's just a lot of people have a hard time processing it, and it gets worse for not just those people, but everyone, as we get older. Now, us white folk process it far better than a lot of other ethnic groups as a whole, but remember that humans are literally the only animal that A) drinks milk from another animal, and B) drinks milk past infancy and early childhood.

I still love cheese, but like trex, I consume very little of my limited amount of dairy intake as a beverage.

I guess it's easy to process for me because I'm still young and growing.

I think I started cutting back on my milk consumption when I turned 26 or 27. It wasn't for any reason more than the fact that it started being noticeably harder on my GI.

Probably work

I still pound a glass of it once a week or so without any ill effects. Otherwise, I have it in coffee almost every day, but that's not very much, I suppose.

The article says that combined with a balanced diet and exercise, drinking 3 glasses of milk per day helps both to burn fat and build muscle.

I'm not convinced I could actually get down three full glasses of milk in a day.

With that being said, Its a beautiful day, I've got two fat NY Strips on the grill, and I'm doing legs tonight.

Have a great weekend, gentlemen!

I have only started cutting back about a year ago. I was a pretty huge milk drinker. I cut it back to 2%, and then reduced what I do drink, so now I pretty much only have it on cereal or with cookies now, which I do a lot less. I used to easily go through a quart a day though.

I don't think I have any issues processing it as so many do even now, I just don't want the fat.

I've been average 99 grams of fat per day over the last 3 weeks (yes I am anal enough to track everything and input into a spreadsheet) and I've gone from 201 at the start to 195.2 as of today. Drinking excess of a gallon of water per day, so I know it's not a water weight loss.

Fat is fine. It keeps energy levels up, helps fight hunger problems, and it makes everything tastier. I'm not advocating a ketogenic (70% or more calories from fat), but it gets an undeserved bad rap.

The naturally occurring sugar found in fruit is considered okay, is the same not true for milk?

The article is mainly focused on 2% milk or skim milk which is much easier to drink.
