There isn't enough on this forum about the best legion, the night lords. The night lords are possibly my fav legion. I know there is a lot of hate for them out there but lets show some love.
Obviously if you think of them as a bunch of stupid, undisciplined cowards then of course you should hate them but may I remind the haters that they are still space marines. The super soldiers, the ultimate warriors of the galaxy. They are far from stupid. And untainted by chaos (for the most part). discuss.

Make sure you start at about a minute if you want to get right to the bat jokes

17,000 points (Valhallan)

6,000 points (Order of Our Martyred Lady)
Proud Countess of House Terryn hosting 7 Knights, 2 Dominus Knights, and 8 Armigers

I just imagine its hard to sneak around when you're constantly getting tree branches, spider webs, and low flying aircraft stuck in your helmet

Plus, what's the point of them? They're bad... for the sake of being bad? They like being scary... because they're scary? They paint lighting squiggles on their armor?
They look like something a 6-year-old would draw as a token villain that sits around maniacally laughing just waiting to get beaten up by superman.
Alpha legion is trying to set up a viable alternative to the imperium. Emperor's Children are attempting to find the limits of human experience. Word Bearers are on a galactic crusade to convert people to belief in gods that actually exist.
Night lords... paint lightning squiggles on their armor and exist to shout "boo" at imperial guardsmen. If there was any bigger goal to them, I'd like them a lot more, but as it is, they just seem too much like generic bad guys in a faction filled with genuinely good villains.
YeahI agree, the Night Lords as a whole aren't very compelling villains. The reason ADB's Night Lords trilogy was so great was because the main character so despised what his Legion was and had become, and exposed just how awful the Night Lords are from the inside.

It wasn't just Night Lords, it was Chaos Marines in general. They weren't bad for the sake of bad, or moustache-twirling villains. They're just filled with hatred and they act the only way that makes sense to them.
I think Night Lords' bat/skull motif is cool and very, very 40k. There are subtle ways to do it, but the giant batwings on the helmets of the Marines is not the way it should be done. Their color scheme rules, and I really like the terror markings/lightning bolts on the armor. A legion that, even when they were loyalists, focused on terror tactics, is super cool to me. If I wasn't already hip deep in power armored models at the moment I'd paint some up.
i'm not a fan of the bat wings either for the models. I only hope that a few different versions are modelled by FW and i would stick with the most subtle. If i could get away with none helmeted models for the lot then that is what i will be doing. Pale skin, black eyes and some element of having skinned bodies draped over their armour would be suitable.
I cant wait to see what the planned murder squads resemble
if a dolphin will jump out of water for fish, just imagine what it would do for chips?

theyre not painting lightning squiggles on their armour. i'm pretty sure the lightning is supposed to be real but people's realization usually isnt very good. nightlords are really fricken hard to paint.
here's what the "squiggles" can look like by someone who knows what theyre doing
I like them because it's a unique and interesting idea and colour scheme. alpha legion is so boring.

The thing is, if such a thing existed in the real world, the lightning would still be painted on. You're PAINTING a lightning scheme on your armor.
It's still a juvenile way to attempt to look more badass.
I mean, they'd be the exact kind of people who would have cars that looked like:
Yes, congratulations, you put neon lights and a useless spoiler and a giant speaker system in your car. And by your car, I mean your mother's Honda Civic.

Guy dressing up as a Bat is just the most idiotic idea ever. But it's still cool. Cause it's Batman. Same with Night Lords.
I was wondering when this would appear
I can see it now....Nids are now a collection of autonomous hive fleets there are multiple Hive Minds and they all war with one another in addition to everyone else. They speak to humans using telepathy, and they can now ally with Space Wolves as battle brothers, because reasons.
Tyranids talking to humans would be like you talking to your mashed potatoes or the probiotic in your kiefer drink. It is neither possible nor productive.
Inside my mind I pinched my nipples and savored his bitter silence.

Real cool, bra...
ok, who cares. we do blood effects, glow effects, weathering effects... all painted on. what is your point?
you dont like painted lightning apparently or just generally want to your models to look boring?
that's really funny "juvenile attempt to look more badass" what in warhammer ISNT a juvenile attempt to look more bad ass? guys in huge armour putting a robe or loincloth over it for some reason, little dumb looking churches built onto the back of motorcycles, guys in huge armour putting on fur pelts for some reason, i could go on... barbie is jealous of how many accessories space marines have.

It's not people painting lightning effects on that's juvenile, it's that the Night Lords paint their armor with lightning effects. At least that's what I took from the post.

Come on are we really complaining about bat helms and lightning when there are space wolves. Giant superhumans In huge armour riding giant wolf's. I do agree there should be some smaller helms made though.

Lol, the NL also paint skulls on their helmets to make them scarier.
Another thing I noticed is that the NL actually keep their serfs alive - I don't think many other traitor legions have as much sympathy for regular humans as the NL do.
I can't wait for ADB to start writing the novels about Decimus. Its gonna be so cool!

Preeeeety sure they don't keep serfs alive out of sympathy, they do it because they make good slaves or are useful in some capacity.
And agreed that Decimus books would be cool, has he mentioned plans for that? He's gonna be pretty busy with the Black Legion series.

The lightning motif is part of their "terror markings" and is (or at least originally was) painted on. If chaos-influenced Night Lords have actual lightning dancing around their armor, that's a different story.
Battlefleet Gothic ships and markers at my store, GrimDarkBits:
the slaves are kept alive because the ships require enormous man power to function. and they can terrify them as much as they wish. I like the idea that there is actual electric on there armour. surely its impossible on a model though.????
