Maybe I forgot something on the Night Lords from the 3rd ed. but as far as I remember those terror markings were referred to the skulls and bats adornments which weren't as used among the legions at pre-heresy era, the lightnings aren't painted on the armor fluffwise but 'eavy metal has painted them on the models since forever. However the late models of the NL only show the dark blue armor with red.

Didn't a squad of NL win a golden demon a few years ago? iirc those looked pretty badass and had no lightning still were clearly NL.
