a dark angels character with displacer fields gets a 3++ scatters d6 if successful

the faq read pretty much the same as a drop pod, stop at other models or impassable terrain.

if you are within 6 inches of the board edge and make this save and scatter off the table is the unit destroyed as it ahs no stated protection from theboard edge and it is not voluntarily leaving the board

sounds like it might be right... i've always wondered how it works with challenges. Because if your scattered out of the challenge, does the challenge end?

If the unit is destroyed if it cannot be placed, and scattering off the board meansy ou cannot be placed....then it is destroyed

I forget the exact wording, and don't have the Codex to hand. How is the move described? Is it stated as simply moving or placing the model - or is it classed as a special kind of Deep Strike?
If it's the latter, then you'd suffer a mishap.

The challenge ends only, if after you scatter and then pile-in, you are disengaged from the combat. The FAQ and codex have no mention of what happens near the board edge (and it is not a special deep strike). This is really a grey area in this wargear. I would say that it would be like falling back (pun and literal) of the table and the unit is considered destroyed.
Of course, it can easily be house ruled to make it so that the unit goes into ongoing reserves (because the unit wasn't destroyed or falling back, so one can assume the character would want to head back to the battlefield).
