I don't know about you, but to me, it seems these days everyone is raving about the newest battlefield game or COD. But why the hype? Why are they so fun?
Every time I play one, it seems ironic, because it seems an expensive game ($60), filled with cheap thrills.
All there is is just running and shooting, so repetitive. For one sitting it's ok to have fun on multiplayer and kill your friends, but to play all day? All week? I know some of my friends do.
Why would I want to run and gun while screaming things like "noob tube" and "no scope" into a mike when I could be going on some epic adventure by playing games like Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Ico.
I'm not saying I like shooters, I just don't like modern ones. Goldeneye is great, Timesplitters is awesome, and who doesn't like Halo. But why do people like these modern day ones, with no originality, where everyone runs around in desert camo and kills islamic extremists. That's why I play games like 40k. Sure, there's shooting and violence involved, but at least it's original. It's in its own cool universe instead of this modern warfare crud.
Is there anyone who agrees with me?

I got bored with modern FPS games a good few years ago. I still buy the odd one (FC3 and rage in the last couple of years) but they have all homogenised into the same game with the same mechanics, the same weapons but slightly different graphics and enemies.
I still play FPS games, mostly TF2 these days, but I have stayed away from thw CoD treadmill since CoD 2.

The prefect example of someone missing the point.
Do not underestimate the Squats. They survived for millenia cut off from the Imperium and assailed on all sides. Their determination and resilience is an example to us all.

They become more like rail-shooters or slightly more interactive versions of QTE's each time.
Here's a fantastic example of what I mean.

I can see that. I am not really a "straight FPS" kind of guy. Games like Mass Effect (2 especially, haven't actually got around to 3) which is a "shooter/RPG" are just amazingly fun in my opinion. It's really hard to get the balance on a game like that right so you have a good mixture of player skill still mattering vs getting better as you level up, but when you do it's just such an amazing experience.
That said, I still have UT2004 installed on my computer, and I played the heck out of assault mode. I still fire it up and check to see if anybody actually has an assault server running sometimes. It's kind of depressing watching the server list get smaller and smaller.
I don't really understand why people complain about a liner storyline in a FPS game...it's a bloody FPS! They've been linear since Wolfenstein.

Linearity isn't the problem. Lack of interactivity is.
Bioshock Infinite is a linear game. Half-Life 2 is a linear game.

I agree. The game simply says "hit X" and the character does a bunch of cool stuff. Bloody hell, let me do that instead!

Its not that I don't like the modern FPS, it's just that... I just don't want it to be alive anymore.

I loved FPS. Halo is what started it for me. Having said that though I find myself bored with them now. I don't generally count games like fallout or far cry in that same category since they seem more rpg to me.
Part of it for me is all the gadgets. There's to much kill streaks or UAV's for tactical play. I would be interested in a throw back game to WW1 or something without all the gadgets so we could be more tactical and up the intensity a bit.
I only play BOPs 2. For a couple weeks. Just to much stuff going off at the same time to counter it all.

I feel the need to add though, that I am tempted on a regular basis to buy a PS3 (at closeout "sell them before the PS4 gets here" prices) just so I can play Dust 514.
Well, Dust and Motorstorm.

I kinda went off call of duty when treyarch (the developers of the game) said that there was going to be a new gamemode for black ops 2. I and most people hoped it was war from WAW (trust me war was fun) but no we got arms race of which they have now removed.

That's the issue for me mostly. I can play a game like S.T.A.L.K.E.R. for hours, yet downed Black Ops pretty much as soon as I got it. However I do happen to like the type the slower style of narrative that games like S.T.A.K.E.R. have, whereas a game where its near constant battles (against unrealistic odds) isn't something I'd invest a lot of time in.
However I did enjoy Spec Ops: The Line, despite that having a similar pace to other shooters. That however was done in a deliberately cliche' manner, which I guess is why I enjoyed it. Unless there's more depth to the game than straight up "kill the foreign guy" I don't think a game will really interest me. Gameplay alone's not going to keep me coming back for the most part, especially if its the case that most of that's on the rails shooting. I'll take a level in a game that has a half dozen enemies (I acually like not knowing if there's someone in the same area as me or not) and a few tidbits of notes to one which was teeming with guys with guns and not much else. =P

I got completely bored with it after about a month of battlefield 3. Prior to that, the battlefield series was probably the only modern FPS I even played at all.
I've always been far more into the old school arena shooter. I still hope we will be seeing a new (and proper) Unreal Tournament game. UT2k4 is to me, still the best FPS game ever.

I really hate how formulaic it has all become. Also, having to empty half a mag into an opponent in single player is tedious as all hell, weak guns are something I really hate. That's right folks. Now playing is replaced with QTA that you don't even have to do. Soon turning off IDDQD will be paid DLC.

Never been one for FPS - especially modern-day ones. Just not into the setting. I did like Halo and Wolfenstein, but wouldn't go out of my way to buy them. Just me

Really, its free, and silly fun (sometimes) and boring (sometimes)
I've grown increasingly tired of single player fps games, they just aren't that fun anymore, when they give me walky boots and a nerf gun that the kinect or whatever can detect so I "am" the dude, we'll talk.

I never actually understood the point of these, since I'm so busy waiting for the next button to pop up I never get a chance to actually watch the fancy scene they're showing me anyway.
Don't get me started on Force Unleashed for Wii and how it had no option to select a "left handed" control setup, so whenever the left side of the screen lit up I had to wave the controller piece I was holding in my right hand... that took my brain a bit to sort out I can tell you!

Two best FPS games I ever played where mods for M&B Warband. First was a ww1 game that was super realistic and fun - trouble is a dodgy patch destroyed the game and community :(
Second was the Chinese Civil Wars mod for the same reason.
The big bonus being people actually died when you shot them. Number of times I have put 4 rounds into someone playing BF3 only to have them turn around and take me out in 1 shot

I don't hate modern shooters, but I do increasingly find myself longing for the shooting of yore, but I also don't touch CoD or battlefield with a 10 foot pole. Last shooter I played was metro and that is rather good in a lot of spots with a few rather bad spots and a few random nipples.
