At first I thought the outrage was over the hipster choice of God Bless America, which was at one time debated as being the alternative national anthem. It's almost like the totally retro national anthem that you haven't heard of yet.

Then I read the article.

Not being a Twitter user, I don't have a frame of reference here: is this really a huge thing, or is it merely the equivalent of a buncha ignorant racist feths commenting on YouTube?

You must forgive many of our fellow citizens, many do not know that the US still holds many Territories that are not states but still give full citizenship status.

This is mainly due to out awesome public school system, and the general ignorance, but I bet they could tell you who won the last american idol.

To a large degree, it really is just this.

But it is also a wonderful example of just how many degrees of ignorance you can fit into one person. Most of these tweets make it clear that they manage to be too stupid to realize just how many mistakes they can make in a single tweet:

1) Mark Anthony is a born US Citizen.
2) Puerto Rico is a territory full of US Citizens.
3) Being "latino" does not make you a Mexican.
3.5) And being Mexican doesn't make you an illegal immigrant anyway.
4) The "American song" is a song written by an immigrant.
5) Calling people racist names just makes you look even stupider than the previous 4 things combined.

God Bless America has been pretty consistently sung during baseball games since 2001, IIRC.

My biggest qualm was that they got Marc Anthony. I mean, it's the MLB All-Star game. Couldn't they get someone a bit more relevant? I mean, I get that he was born in NYC, and the game was there...better options include, but are not limited to:

Alicia Keys
Lenny Kravitz
Scarlett Johanssen
Carly Simon
Fiona Apple.

Hell, Rosario Dawson and Gina Torres can both sing even tho they aren't singers first and are actually, you know, relevant.

I think it'd be great to sing "God Bless my Underwear" at an event like that.

What CincyDooley said. That song pops up quite often in public events, sporting or otherwise. It's one of the most commonly sung songs in the country for large public events.

Because, despite the fact that he was born in this country, he's brown.

And I'd wager there's plenty of backlash toward him in lieu of the Zimmerman verdict. Which is interesting, because he wasn't brown during that trial......

I've been to Houston, they slapped a baseball field like right where the highway should be, in my experience it would have been faster to attend a baseball game if you were allowed to drive out the other side of the stadium

Is there more than one huge ass dome next to a skyway with a baseball on the side?

There's two right next to each other now (Enron Field or whatever its called now and the Toyota Center) and both right next to Interstate 59 (you know the big highway sitting next to it) north is I10 and I45 makes the other side.

The Astros don't play in a dome anymore... The Reliant Astrodome has been defunct for at least 5 years, but Google Maps says that dome is next to a highway.

that must have been it, I flew into houston and had to drive to corpus cristi and got stuck next to that stupid building on the skyway for like 4 hours

it was some giant domed building, with a baseball on the side and a lot of arches around its periphery (sp)
