There seems to be some sort of superstition in wargaming that when a newly painted unit, or particularly well painted or exciting unit or character is fielded is in its first game, it will get one shotted to death, or fail to do damage or generally fail.

However yesterday Shiny New Model Syndrome didn't occur. I was fielding my Blood Ravens Gabriel Angelos, using Arjac Rockfist's model and Lysander rules. He helped a Tactical Terminator squad bash up a squad, scrapped a Leman Russ and only took 2 wounds. I ended up winning 7VP to 1 against Imperial Guard to boot.

So I was just wondering if anyone else had stories of times when Shiny New Model syndrome didn't occur to you.

For the record, I wasn't using a cheesy Lysnader list. LRR, Tactical Terminators with Lysander, 2 ML/Flamer/Chainsword Tactical Squad, a 5 Scouts with Heavy Bolter, ADL with Quad gun, manned by a Dev squad with 2 HB, ML and MM. A vindicator and that's it.

Last weekend I was fielding a CSM Land Raider and a forgefiend which both hadn't had their fire baptism yet.
I played two games, won both.
SNMS occurs on the Forgefiend during the first turn of the first games (taken out by ADL quad gun of all things, double sixes :( ) while the Land Raider merrily taxied Kharn around for the two games while blowing up transports of the opponents.
It didn't even lose a HP

My crisis teams, whichever one has the commander with it, at least one of the suits (almost always him) survives the battle.

Possibly because my gunships are taking all the fire, having been painted at the same time, but meh.

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

My first game with my Assault Terminators in my Crimson Fists army saw them eat about 800 points worth of Necrons while taking fire from most of the remainder of the army every turn. My opponent pulled some boneheaded moves that really contributed to his own demise, but they still won the game for me and it was their first time out.

First game after assembling my first Tyrannofex he 1-shot my brother's brand new Falcon tank on my first turn of shooting (5th edition). To this day the big lug still seems to hold an animus against that tank, as every time the Falcon shows up to play odds are the Tyrannofex ends up downing it at some point.

More recently, my newly converted Swarmlord performed amazingly well in his first game (6th edition). He took at least 10 unsaved wounds over the course of the game and kept regaining them with Life Leech (at the end if I recall correctly he was at 3 wounds and the last bug standing).

I usually get the opposite. My club groans when I pull out a newly completed model... cause its gonna be insane on its rolls that game.

Yeah, that happened to me just yesterday. I'd bought a Manticore, lovingly painted it up. Showed up and had a 2v2, Me playing IG and the other guy playing Orks, vs Imperial Fists and Nids (There was a flood warning and nobody at the shop okay) first rocket, 7 terminators and a razorback died. Next turn, 75 hormagaunts went down the drain.

When I first got the nightbringer (oldcron), he carved his way through a unit of carnifexes, a trygon, and a bunch of warriors before being laid low by the combined might of a hive tyrant, its guard unit, and the swarmlord. So much for shiny new model syndrome.

Gods? There are no gods. Merely existences, obstacles to overcome.
