Buying a Necron army later today, just wanted to ask a few questions regarding them, as well as asking if what I am buying is my best bet.

1x Overlord
1x Battleforce
2x Command barge (to be built as annihilation barge)

Now for my questions:
1. Do the Necron lords that come with the command barges have to be in them? or can they run without them, nobody I asked had the same answer...
2. Would it be better for me to buy more troops? or fill out the vehicles first?
3. Deathmarks or immortals or dont use either?

yes I know most of these are probably simple questions...

Now onto the paint..

I had a few idea's the first being a basic metallic color warrior like everyone has, then my vehicles being covered in a really thinned out wash of mithril silver for a shiny black look.

Second idea, was wazdakka red armor with auric gold for the under armor, or gold with red under armor. then the vehicles being painted with wazdakka red mixed with some chaos black for a dark solid red color, then highlighted with the auric gold - aka ironman

final Idea that I had was mixing a color with my mithril silver like, red or blue to get a metallic color. then leaving the under armor chaos black. and the vehicles being black with a light covering of tin bitz

I am kinda bad at painting but I always stress over the colors to use, so any idea on which is best would be awesome, or if you have an Idea as well, let me know! it will probably be better then what I have here

Thanks for any help or tips you can give me!

In terms of the model purchases, command barge kits can be made as annihilation barges or command barges. In either case, each kit comes with a stand alone, plastic overlord to put together. So there is no need to get a separate overlord. That said, you won't have any lords or Crypteks for your royal court.

Also a command barge can move and shoot it's single weapon even if the overlord is not embarked; however, it cannot make its sweeping attack.

For starting out, I would recommend Immortals and to look into buying a separate box of them to fill out a unit of 10. Tesla immortals are superior to warriors at max range. Deathmarks are good but for starting out, immortals are better.

If you are planning to run 2 annihilation barges, you are pretty set for your initial vehicles.

As for painting - take one model and try out each scheme and see which you like best.

The ABs bring a plastic Overlord with Warscythe, there's no need to buy that finecast Overlord unless you really want. If they are ABs, no, no need for them to be there, there isn't even space. I use my plastic Overlords as HQs for the army.

With 2 ABs + Ghost Ark your vehicles are set for now. The Battleforce brings 5 Immortals and 12 Necrons (IIRC), you need more but this is a good start. It's the troops that will win you the games.

3. Deathmarks or immortals or dont use either?
Immortals are fantastic troops. You won't regret them, ever.
Deathmarks are cool as "counter" units, but for now focus on troops. Deathmarks are Elites. (And you can easily convert warriors into Deathmarks)

This one has my vote. Paint the warrior's symbol light blue and it's perfect But Unhollyllama has the perfect answer. You are the one who'll be painting them. Make sure you test each paint scheme and choose your favorite.

Note, if you use warrior legs and chest pieces, you can build both immortals and deathmarks from the battleforce boxes so you should end up with 15 warriors, deathmarks and immortals.

From here, your next purchase will depend on how you like to play. Certainly, more warriors or immortals won't go astray (remembering that if you buy another box of immortals - if you keep warrior legs and chests from the battleforce, you can make deathmarks and immortals again). You will need crypteks (and a few of them). If you buy a lychguard box you can make lych or praetorians but mainly you get a massive number of bits to make crypteks with (again basing on warrior bodies). So, next purchase should be warrior box with lychguard box I'd suggest.

For a walking army if you can afford it, buy another battleforce. Then you'll need something meaty for CC. As you have 5 scarabs, Spyders would be cheaper than wraiths (if you go wraiths, you'll need 2 boxes) and they have MC goodness.

For a mech army, battleforce (for the GA) or Scythes, but they are pretty pricey.

And, welcome to the crons

As people have noted the annhilation barges come with bases for a normal overlord on foot.

As for the paint scheme. There is a product I bought, though I cannot remember the name of it, that adds metallic flakes to a paint. It let me make a metallic purple for my necrons. Adding that to your wazdakka red might get the effect you want.
