So I would like to start a Tau army.
Only problem is they are becoming massively over-represented and have become incredibly disliked.
I understand the reasons.
Is it a stupid idea to start an army everyone hates?
I mean I like painting and modelling but I like playing too, seems like the playing might be the problem.
Any thoughts?

I think you should do whatever makes you happy. If the Tau appeal to you you should go for it. I think they are a really interesting Xenos race. That said, Tau are pretty controversial atm. I would not be surprised if we see sweeping changes to its codex in the future. Largely due to supporting fire & being able to negate your opponents cover & the way drones work etc.

Do what makes you happy!

Play the army that you want to play and to hell with the hate. As time goes on and more armies are released Tau players will become fewer in number and those that follow "flavor of the month" are likely to move on.

(Besides, some of us xenos players remember fifth edition's Imperial "golden-age" and like giving our human counterparts their comeuppance. Enjoy it while it lasts as marines are likely to swing back strong.)

Tau arent as bad as people make them out to be. Theyre damn strong dont get me wrong but i get the vibe that i win with tau unless i make a deliberate mistake. Noone actually says that but i can feel that everyone thinks it whe i hear them talk after a game.

Just because you need a different tactic than internet list #251 you printed off to beat tau doesnt make them op. Thats why people hate them, you actually have to plan out more than your list and people arent used to that.
If you wanna play tau, play tau. Triple helldrake csm players get more flak than tau, yet people still do it

I paint and build much more than I play anymore..and the longer I have been in the hobby, the larger that gap gets...

So if you like the Tau, and want to paint them, model them..and more importantly put a lot of money into them, don't let other players sour grapes about such and such army color your choices, since people will always have something to gripe about, right now it may be Tau, next could be marines, or Orks or space jelly babies, just do what you like.

Since whatever you decide its more about you and your little plastic soldiers..trying to make other people happy will just make you not, I have 4-5 armies and kinda flit from one to the other, and am fortunate to have players mature enough just to play the player and not the army.

As others have said, get the Tau! They are just the flavour of the month right now.... which is why you see plenty of them.

Within the next year we will see SM, Nids, Ork, and IG (according to rumours) getting new codices. These are very popular armies that will even out the distribution of armies once they are released.

People only seem to complain when someone fields a bunch of pathfinders supported by 3 riptides (which aren't that bad.....). Enjoy!

Give it 90 days, it will all be eldar and (what ever the new dex is).

People just have not figured out how to play against the new tau yet ...I am an old tau player, and I played against a new tau player this weekend, and it was embarrassing how bad I trashed his army.

Its still a thinking man's army to do well against an experienced (or smart) player, and once the net figures out how to beat them the rhetoric will die down.

The good news is that soon you find them cheap on ebay....

Best of luck, and play what you want.

Definitely go with tau, I wanted tau before the new codex and then the new codex came out and I was like damn everyone's gunna play tau. Then I said whatever I want to play them cause it's my play style and I like the models and the fluff.

What's the point of close combat when you have guns to shoot?Haha

If there are lots of tau players in your area and if people don't like it just bring different units like piranhas, kroot, vespids and sunshark bombers that will throw people off :p

If you actually like tau then start tau. They are a lot of fun and really good on the table top.

For me I knew I wanted to play a xenos race. I didn't like demons or necron models so they were crossed off my list. Out of the fluff I like tau and dark eldar. I love eldar vehicles but don't like the infantry so I dropped eldar. Then I liked the play style of tau the best so ultimately I picked them.

Just start with a group of armies you like and slowly eliminated them based on models, playstyle and fluff.

I agree with the rest of the posters here. I love the look and feel of the Tau. I wouldn't play the army as the Meta goes though, so no players are going to fear my Tau on the battlefield for a while.

I understand exactly where you're coming from too. I've been steadily building and painting an Eldar army for close to a year now. It's still small as I'm slow and don't have tons of time to put into the modeling aspect right now. Think people are gonna care when I start showing up with FotM? Nope, and they can shove it! The worst part is I just made a sweet deal on a 1k Tau army I'm picking up next week... yeah, I feel you man.
