By Tank Destroyers I'm referring to vehicles that are NOT main battle tanks, but lightly armoured vehicles that pack a terrifying armament (like a WWII Hellcat, Marder, or something along those lines). So we're talking about vehicles which would probably be in the AV 10/11 department, but with some pretty serious ordnance (demolisher cannon or las cannon-equivalent weapons). Understandably, these would be cheaper than MBTs due to their decreased survivability but still more expensive than other light vehicles on account of their weapons. If such a class of vehicle existed in 40K, would you use it? The closest thing I can think of that fits the description now is a Dark Eldar Ravager, but Dark Lances don't quite cut it for me. Thoughts?

Like a 10/10/10 Fast, Open-topped, Skimmer with a Strength 8, AP2 Lance weapon?

Greebo had spent an irritating two minutes in that box. Technically, a cat locked in a box may be alive or it may be dead. You never know until you look. In fact, the mere act of opening the box will determine the state of the cat, although in this case there were three determinate states the cat could be in: these being Alive, Dead, and Bloody Furious.
Orks always ride in single file to hide their strength and numbers.

Or perhaps selg-propelled guns like the StuG III, or y'know, the vindicator.

If the vindi design wasn't based on the appaling rhino model, StuGs in the right scale would be perfect proxies, but they have reasonable front armour layouts and sensibly low profiles. Can't have that.

There's also pretty damn close M10 standins in the shape of Deldar skimmers...

Oh yes, and take a look at many WW2 tank destroyer designs which performed well and tell me again about light armour (hello, jagdtiger)

I collect:
Guard - 2k of mostly infantry
DA - 2k of deathwing, 2k of other bits (no vehicles)
Sisters - mostly converted/proxy because I'm waiting for therange to go plastic.
Tau - 2k with no riptides because I can.

Or... You know... The Destroyer Tank Hunter. Not a light vehicle by any stretch, but you see what I'm getting at.

I explicitly said a Dark Lance didn't cut it, so no, not like a 10/10/10 fast, open-topped skimmer with a S8 AP2 lance.

To the other responses... Zoanthropes are not vehicles, so uh... thanks? I also don't know how the Destroyer Tank Hunter or the Valdor Tank Hunter (a god damn SUPER HEAVY no less) could possibly be classed as light vehicles, but okay... Sure.

That's definitely more in the vain of what I was thinking, though I still had a tracked vehicle in mind. But yeah, I guess that fits the idea.

Actually I posted some real WWII Tank Hunters plus a similarly configured 40K model (though a super heavy instead of the smaller, lighter real designs I showed) for the lulz.

Not that there weren't soem real super-heavy Tank Destroyers either

However it sounds like you actually aren't after a light armored vehicle at all. Something more like this.

Depends on what you consider to be powerful armament on a light vehicle. Dark Lances are verboten, but why? They make a mockery of heavy armour and aren't bad at fething over heavy tanks.

Tank destroyers were developed because of technological limitations in WWII. In 40k, there are plenty of options for this role. Lascannon IG heavy weapons sqauds, Devastators, turbo-penetrator rounds, Gauss weapons, etc. fulfill those roles much more than a stop-gap method.

This is called an Immolator. A TL-Lascannon Razorback seems to fit the bill as well.

Okay, so it doesn't have wheels, but there's always the various Land Speeder configs, Typhoon Launcher or Multi Melta Springs to mind.

Don't have the SM Codex to hand, can Razorbacks take TL Multi Meltas? That would do the job. Or a Multi Melta Immolator.

A dark lance doesn't cut it but a las cannon does? I don't want to get bogged down in a comparison but I don't think the DL can be called "pretty seriuos ordinance" if the DL isn't.

Medusa with BB shells is about as bang-on as you'll get in 40k, rules wise. Str10, ap1, armourbane small blast at 48inches is pretty much the killiest AT weapon in the game stat-wise.

And lucky for you, its on a lightly armoured AV12/10/10 open topped carrier.

Medusa, lascannon Razorbacks, Fusion pirahnas, Vindicators if their range was reasonable would fall into that catagory.

If you dont short hand your list, Im not reading it.
Example: Assault Intercessors- x5 -Thunder hammer and plasma pistol on sgt.
or Assault Terminators 3xTH/SS, 2xLCs
For the love of God, GW, get rid of reroll mechanics. ALL OF THEM!

I don't rhink the OP gets that different armies do the job of rank hunting in different ways. Zoanthropes are indeed tank destroyers, as are Valdors, vindicators, and dark lances.

having lots of armor wasnt an issue back then, but there was no such thing as an effective man portable anti tank weapon (there were some, but they were woefully underpowered) like there is today. They also lacked any guided missiles or effective anti armor rockets. So both sides decided that an extremely light, agile platform with what is essentially a fixed artillery canon bolted to the chassis was ideal. These vehicles could easily get into position, fire their guns at rear or side armor, then run off. They would easily succumb to any fire, since their armor was light, and some were even open topped. The modern day equivalent of this role is the Javelin, the Apache Gunship, and the Stryker MGS (its got a BIG gun). For this role, i would imagine Sentinels, Devil Dogs, fusion piranhas , RAvager/raiders, Lascannon razorbacks, and War Walkers would fit this description perfectly. I would like to say medusas, but they just arent mobile enough for the role, and mobility is key to survival for this weapon concept.
